Driven to Distraction: Are Mobile Technologies Hindering Society?

The dangers of distracted driving have reached an all-time high with the proliferation of mobile phone users, and many companies are getting a jump on the next big thing to manage cell phone use in the car. Smart phones typically feature voice activated command functions to make hands free calls, text, or use GPS navigation; however, even with these features the number of deaths reported resulting from distracted driving in the US mounted 3,328 in 2012 (www.distraction.gov).

A variety of safe texting and anti-texting campaigns have sprung up in regards to distracted driving, resulting in an onslaught of apps and software that intervene by disabling cell phone use while in the car, responding to calls and texts with automatic ‘busy driving’ messages, or even by reporting teen’s phone use in the car to parents or insurance companies. In the same way, the auto industry is also stepping in with the advent of smart dashboards and connected cars.
Driven To Distraction: Are Advances In Mobile Technologies Hindering Society?
The recent CES 2014 conference featured new and forthcoming technologies assisting in making mobile phones less hands-on. CES is a global consumer electronics and technology tradeshow that takes place every January in Las Vegas, Nevada. One of the highlights was the connected car.

The connected car features a mobile hot spot complete with apps and capabilities that range from running car diagnostics to closing the garage door or locking the doors away from home. GPS systems have been available in cars for over a decade, but connected cars allow drivers to speak to their in-dash system to find anything from the nearest parking spot, restaurant, or to verbally make a phone call or text message.

So, the question is, will the connected car aid in the issue of distracted driving, or will having such technologies so readily available just further divert our attention? The issue of distraction by technology and media is explored within the article “Mobile Media Use, Multitasking, and Distractibility,” from the International Journal of Cyber Behavior, Psychology, and Learning.

The International Journal of Cyber Behavior, Psychology and Learning (IJCBPL) offers a forum for academic exchange of new ideas and research findings related to psychological aspects and serves as a vehicle for promoting techniques and methodologies derived from rigorous research and practices that use psychological and cognitive principles to design and develop cyber learning.

This article examines how multitasking with media affects users' performance in various domains (e.g., driving, walking, work, and academic pursuits). Researchers from Central Connecticut State Laura Levine, Bradley Waite, and Laura Bowman address the question of why media multitasking is related to distraction, distractibility, and impulsivity. By examining historical research on media and distractibility and reviewing cognitive and neuropsychological research on the effects of divided attention, the writers explore how high levels of media multitasking might alter general responses to experience in ways that are marked by changes in distractibility and impulsivity.
