Abstract
This chapter shows the importance of professional development and why educators, specifically online adjuncts, must participate in ongoing professional development to improve their pedagogical skills. This chapter will highlight the importance of professional development, the challenges of online adjuncts, the styles of professional development, and why professional development is necessary for adjunct faculty. Therefore, universities and institutions can use professional development to support online adjuncts in their role further and ensure they are prepared to teach students successfully. Professional development is proven to streamline information to faculty and ensure they understand the expectations of their role and the university's requirements. Online adjuncts are a particular faculty group that requires more support because they tend to be off-campus and not entrenched in the university's culture. Therefore, professional development can keep adjuncts current and increase a sense of belonging to the university.
