Abstract

Healthcare, which is considered as one of the most strategic fields, has noticed a remarkable and continuous progress over time. Yet, this sensitive field though the crucial role it plays in providing both individuals and communities with cure and care, still needs more attention from policy makers, researchers, and doctors due to the rapid and intensive progress information communication technologies (henceforth ICT) improve day after day. Hence, the present investigation attempts to highlight the use of ICT technologies in developing healthcare in Algeria as a case study and seeks to suggest better ways of using technological advancement to overcome the challenges that still hinder against its progress. The study in hand is divided into several parts. First, it tackles the recent situation of healthcare in matter of using digital technologies in accessing, processing, and storing information. Then, it tries to shed light on the different drawbacks of the misuse of ICT in healthcare settings and state the causes and consequences.

Introduction

Since ever, healthcare has been as a field of interest and importance. Similarly to the existence of the human being, healthcare has always gone through different phases of progress. From the use of herbal medicine in which various herbs had been used in curing sick people, and which lasted for centuries, to the use of medications after scientific research had spread throughout all fields in general and healthcare in particular. Yet, there has always been a crucial need to finding a better way in performing delicate surgeries mainly for the serious illnesses, doing medical tests, and medical x-rays (Yıkılmaz, 2020).

Besides, after the appearance of information communication technologies (henceforth ICT) healthcare has noticed a remarkable shift towards great progress when different technologies have been used in different medical centers, hospitals, etc. Indeed, the use of technologies in healthcare has improved good outcomes but there are still some difficulties that hinder against attaining specialists; here, the doctors and researchers’ desires and targets in Algeria are a case study. In this vein, the following research questions have been stated:

  • How is the current state of healthcare in Algeria?

  • What types of technologies are used in healthcare in Algeria?

  • How can the Human Resources in healthcare be trained to use the new technologies?

In accordance to the previous research questions, the following hypotheses have been suggested:

  • Algeria has adopted the new Information Communication Technologies in different fields, as healthcare is considered as a strategic field hence the situation may be adequate to the demands.

  • Indeed, there are noticeable interchanges between Algeria and various developed countries in matter of new technologies. Hence all sorts of technologies should be adopted in healthcare field

  • New ICTs means new ways of use and new methods therefore training human resources in healthcare is crucial so as to up-date their knowledge, competencies and profeciency.
