Abstract

This chapter uses a tightrope analogy to illustrate how Black women in educational leadership balance assimilating into white professional norms while staying true to themselves. It examines this balance's psychological and professional challenges, including identity negotiation, cultural betrayal, and transitioning from “work pet” to “work threat.” Drawing on Black feminist theory and Patricia Hill Collins' Matrix of Domination, the chapter provides a detailed analysis of these experiences. Results reveal strong correlations between identity affirmation and increased psychological workplace abuse. The EmpowH.E.R. Leadership Blueprint offers strategies to address these challenges, aiming to empower Black women to maintain their authentic identities in professional environments.
