Artificial intelligence (AI) is affecting all of our working lives. Computing machines that can simulate intelligent behavior may not only affect the work we do but also have a high potential to help reduce unconscious bias within organizations. Artificial intelligence is expected to affect all of our working lives. Computers that can simulate intelligent behavior may not only affect the work we do, they may also be able to help reduce unconscious bias within organizations. Today, AI solutions are being developed that have the potential to mitigate biases and, as a result, enable more diverse and inclusive workplaces.
Diversity refers to the traits and characteristics that make people unique while inclusion refers to the behaviors and social norms that ensure people feel welcome. Equity on the other hand refers to fairness and equality in outcomes and not just support and resources. With workplace equity, companies look to identify and acknowledge specific needs related to demographics such as ethnicity, race, gender and gender identity, disabilities, and more. We define inclusion as a set of behaviors (culture) that encourages employees to feel valued for their unique qualities and experience a sense of belonging. In simple terms, inclusion is getting the mix to work together. A diverse, equality-based, and inclusive workplace makes everyone, regardless of who they are or what they do for the business, feel equally involved in and supported in all areas of the workplace.
In this book, the nature of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is explored from the view of AI tools and data science technologies to make diverse and inclusive workplaces and provide insights into the role that AI can play in mitigating biases and promoting inclusiveness and equity at workplaces. Also, various chapters provide critical actions, suggestions, and methods for success in using AI to enhance DEI practices in modern businesses for business value creation.
