Abstract

The importance of fall detection techniques in the developing and developed nations due to the increase in elder population has been discussed in many studies. Their results encouraged many researchers and industries to design new assistive living products to enhance the wellbeing of elders. Meanwhile, no previous researches discussed the importance to involve the elders in their design. Due to this, the elders have less awareness and adaption towards those techniques. In this paper, elders were given a questionnaire to find out their attitude and awareness towards various ambient assistive techniques concerning fall detection. Results revealed that most of the elders see that presence of fall detection is very important. Moreover, there were significant differences between ambient assistive techniques. The study findings assess their nature and adaptability level by the elder and are important to researchers and industries for the design and implementation of ambient assistive techniques in the future.

Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) referred to “Welfare Technology” provides a core service to elders in terms of wearable, ambient and vision systems. AAL also termed as intelligent assistive systems which provides better quality of life and independent living. The objective of AAL is to wrap design, techniques and technologies that link and improve novel advancements, with an emphasis on elders. To promote innovation and development in the area of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) towards elders’ quality of life and residential care, European Commission (EU) offered a fund of budget 600 million Euros to around twenty-two European countries.

Design led innovations for Active Aging (DAA) described welfare technology that helps elders to gain more independence with specific day-to-day challenges in Activities of Daily Living (ADL), regardless of their health issues (Lopes, 2017) .AAL has emphasized on six specific areas pertain to assistive living (Rodil et al, 2018), that can facilitate elderly people with health issues and disability. Table 1 shows the list of AAL’s project areas where the outcome of AAL’s efforts are novel, stimulating and motivating.
