Abstract

Women are no less than men. She herself is on par with a man. WO-MAN empowering is not only a verbal concept; it should be in practical life. She is no less than a man in any work assigned to her. She is always ill-treated as a weaker sex. But in the real life, she is more powerful than a man. Her commitment towards her work is always dedicated. She always tries to prove herself in any task assigned to her. This movement of women empowerment is not a new one. When you look back into the prehistoric period, women were treated as equal warriors, better half to men. They were strong enough in mind and soul. Then when and where did she lose her identity? Why is she treated as a weaker sex? Why she is deprived of her right to respect, recognition, and remuneration in the outer world with reference to her male colleagues? Through this chapter, the author is trying to shed light on the rights of a women, which she is deprived of since ages.

Introduction

In the global scenario only few countries are named as she nations. One such nation is India. A country which is always recognized for the respect given to women folk of their nation. A country which is named after as Bharath Matha[ Mother]. It is often said that the status and position of women in society are the mirror images of their civilization, its progress and its shortcomings. In case of India, women have come a long way from women being warriors, saints and scholars in the Rig Vedic period, to the women who entered into armed forces, IT sector, politics, Entrepreneur, industry and other significant areas by effectively and efficiently managing their role. She also play role of a daughter, wife and mother irrespective of her education, position she hold in society. Women had to fight the traditional Indian male-dominated society to emerge as stronger and independent entity. While all these are positive developments, cases of rape, harassment at workplace and dowry deaths are rampant. Illiteracy and ignorance about her rights are still prevalent among a majority of the women. Through this paper the author want to throw a light to the aspects of women remuneration at work, recognition at workplace and family, respect she deserve. Women empowerment here is focused from prehistoric period to the present era.

Background Of This Study

Women are the power of nation. In the present century the statistics tell that appx. 50% of the worlds working population are women. In a country like India women are always treated like goddess. India itself is called as She nation. Right from ancient times India is always regarded as a nation who respects women. They were empowered from age old times In earlier historic Epic of Mahabharata the great warriors were name after their mother like.Gangaputhra-Bhishma pitamaha, Kunth putra- first 3 brothers of pandavas(Dharmaraj, Arjuna, Bheem), Karna was named as Radhaiya as he was brought up by Radha, Anjani putra named after Hanuman, lord Krishna also called as Yashoda putra . India also worships goddess Lakshim, Saraswathi, Durga. Women in Pre-Vedic Period: Historical studies and the scriptures indicate that Indian woman enjoyed a comparatively high status during the early Vedic period (2000 B.C. to 1000 B.C.), surpassing contemporary civilizations in ancient Greece and Rome. The Aryans, who were mostly busy fighting wars, regarded woman as useful and productive members of society. The condition of Vedic Woman was good. Woman also enjoyed religious status like that of men, especially in Vedic initiation and studies. The Rig Veda provides ample evidence to prove that women were treated at par with men they had capacity to acquire the highest knowledge, even the absolute knowledge. During the Rig Veda period women were rendered the highest social status but this slowly started fading away. They were neglected and their status fell in the later Vedic and Epic period. They were not at all treated equally with men or were not enjoying equal rights and privileges as compared to men. Though the woman participated in each family ceremony with men but they only played a role as a silent observer not an active participant. However, changes into the status of woman introduced in 15th century. Saints and supporters of bhakti movement were expounded and spoken about equality of woman with men. Women constituted the keystone in the arch of Indian society.

A glance into Indian history reveals the facts of India great women warriors like Rani Rudramadevi fromWarangal (Telengana), Rani of Jansi Lakshmi Bai etc. Jijabai mother of great Chatrapati Shivaji who trained her son as a great warrior etc. Razia Sultana, Rudrama Devi, Rani Mangammal, Rani Velu Nachiyar, Chand Bibi. Abbakka Rani. Tarabai, Bibi Dalair Kau.etc who are icons of women empowerment.
