Proposing a Journal

For those interested in proposing a new OA journal, here is a brief overview of the information required for the proposal form.
Open Access Publishing Questions

In the first section, the Editor(s)-in-Chief (EICs) must review and accept the OA policy, fees, and licensing statement to ensure they understand the expectations associated with OA journals.

Editor/Author Information
This next section of the proposal form requests information for the EIC(s) organizing the book project. It is important for an EIC to ensure that their CV/Resume is updated before attaching it to the proposal in either a Word or PDF format. Uploaded CVs should include:
Degrees earned
Memberships
Professional and Academic Experience
Awards
Publications (highlighting or separating out led projects
Conferences Organized or Attended

Another important consideration is the order in which the EICs are listed. The first EIC listed is the lead EIC on the book project. Therefore, the first EIC should be the most active and qualified of the group.

Society/Association and Funding Body

In this section, the EIC(s) will complete the “Society/Association Information” and “Funding Body” section. The EIC(s) is required to fill out the information for the society/association that is partnering with the journal as well as the information for the entity that will be providing the funding for the journal.

Tentative Titles

The EIC(s) should list at least 3 title suggestions for their journal. Should the book be accepted, the final title for the journal will be determined by the Executive Editorial Board following best practices and to ensure maximum visibility of the title through discoverability systems.

Indexing Keywords

This section contains specific keywords that describe the journal and can be used to help their eventual categorization, should the journal be accepted.

Description

This section requests an overview of what the journal will be about, as well as an introduction to the subject itself. The EIC(s) should thoroughly yet concisely explain the topic of the proposed journal.

Objectives and Mission
In this section, the EIC(s) should discuss the objectives and mission that the journal provides to the field of research. Ultimately, it asks the EIC(s) why the journal should be published. It is important that while answering this section, the EIC(s) keeps in mind the following questions:
Question Mark How will this journal impact current research?
Question Mark How is this journal going to benefit the research community?
Question Mark How will this journal further or continue research in the field?
Question Mark How does this journal differ from others like it?
Journals that have the highest chance of being accepted include forthcoming research that addresses gaps in the current literature available to the research community and is not on a theme that is already oversaturated with content.
Potential Associate Editors/Editorial Review Board Members

This section requests the names and affiliations of potential Editorial Review Board (ERB) Members. The inclusion of these resources is necessary for the peer review process. These individuals must confirm their appointment prior to being formally added to the review board. The EIC(s) should be prepared to list 30+ internationally diverse ERB members should the journal be accepted.

Intended Audience

In this section, the EIC(s) should be prepared to address the fundamental purpose of the journal. Who will benefit most from its content? Who is the primary audience to use this journal? It is important to consider academic as well as professional uses for the journal.

Plan for Reaching Contributors

When proposing an journal, it is expected that the EIC(s) will have an established plan for reaching potential article authors. This plan assures the Executive Editorial Board that the EIC(s) will have no difficulty receiving articles on the relevant topics for the journal. Additionally, as an international academic publisher, it is important that IGI Global journals showcase regional diversity amongst authorship of articles. Thus, the review panel will also be looking for plans to reach article authors from all over the world.

Acceptable venues for distributing the Call for Articles and seeking article authors to invite include, but are not limited to:

Potential Solicitation Channels

The next section is optional and requests that the EIC(s) list any abstracting services and/or indices they are familiar with that align with the mission and coverage of the proposed journal. If/when the journal is contracted and it meets the criteria outlined by the abstracting services and/or indices, this journal will be submitted for consideration.

Abstracting Services and Indices (optional)

In this section, the EIC(s) must identify potential contexts in which this journal will be used and to what market this journal is appropriate for.

Open Access Repositories (optional)

The next section is also optional and requests that the EIC(s) list any OA repositories they are familiar with that align with the mission and coverage of the proposed journal. If/when the journal is contracted and it meets the criteria outlined by the repository, this journal will be submitted for consideration.

Research Partnerships (optional)

This closing section is optional and asks the EIC(s) if they are currently a member of a research association or society that might be interested in partnering with the proposed journal. If so, the name of the association or society, the contact person’s full name, title, and e-mail address are requested.

Upload Considerations

This final section is a place to upload any files associated with the journal for consideration such as a sample call for papers, sample manuscript, CVs/resumes, etc.

In this section, the EIC(s) must clarify key questions surrounding the current printing of the journal.

Journal Information

The EIC(s) must provide the journal information such as the current title and acronym, website, ISSN, established date, number of current volumes, average number of articles per issue/year, frequency, and number of manuscript submissions.
