Introduction

Water, an indispensable element for life, is being increasingly coveted around the world. At present, more than a quarter of the world's population is living in a water-stressed country, and it is estimated that this proportion will rise to around two-thirds by 2025. As a natural resource, water has therefore become a global issue and a cause of conflicts. 97% of the world's water is classified as salty. Given the freshwater shortage affecting some major cities, including Barcelona, it seems only logical to turn to this enormous resource. As a direct result, seawater desalination plants are becoming more and more common in coastal areas. Desalination today costs an average of US$ 0.5 per cubic metre, with variations depending on scale, electricity demand and distribution. Clearly, this means that it does not respond to the demands of the world's rural poor, who constitute the main casualties of the water crisis. Furthermore, it is clearly not appropriate to use desalination to supply water for irrigation.

Objective

The objectives of this book are to review the present state of the artwork in this field, from both a engineering and an economic perspective. The development of the reverse osmosis process is considerable, not least because of its low energy requirements thanks to the use of new, high-performance energy recovery systems. Seawater pre-treatment, however, requires particular special attention if clogged membranes are to be eliminated. The use of flash or multiple distillation is still very popular, particularly in Middle Eastern countries where energy considerations are less of a problem. Other non conventional processes for the supply of water to arid zones are also addressed: wastewater recycling, long-distance transport of fresh water. This book on Desalination of seawater and brackish water is based on concrete knowledge of international research and is for professionals in the water businesses, engineers, technicians and environmental students.

Target Audience

International research Professionals Engineers, Technicians Environmental students.

Submission Procedure

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before October 6, 2024, a chapter proposal of 1,000 to 2,000 words clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors will be notified by October 20, 2024 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines.Full chapters of a minimum of 10,000 words (word count includes references and related readings) are expected to be submitted by December 8, 2024, and all interested authors must consult the guidelines for manuscript submissions at https://www.igi-global.com/publish/contributor-resources/before-you-write/ prior to submission. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-anonymized review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project.

Note: There are no submission or acceptance fees for manuscripts submitted to this book publication, Opportunities and Obstacles in Water Desalination and Economic Integration. All manuscripts are accepted based on a double-anonymized peer review editorial process.

All proposals should be submitted through the eEditorial Discovery® online submission manager.
