Introduction

Despite earning a significant percentage of postsecondary degrees, women navigate unique challenges in their various roles in higher education. Some of these challenges include issues with mental health, emotional distress, psychological trauma, stress, the pervasive trust gap, and related concerns. In lieu of this reality, this book aims to support the recruitment, retention, and success of women administrators, faculty, and staff in academic environments. Readers will learn about the lived experiences of women faculty and leaders, including unique intersectional experiences, and experiences of women from underrepresented groups.

Objective

This book is a valuable resource to increase understanding of support networks, interventions, and models that aid higher education professionals in navigating various challenges. Readers will gain insight into educational, preventative, and collaborative approaches to providing support. The authors emphasize the benefits and motives of support and highlight systems and methods of support that may be lacking in higher education. This work provides an overview of current realities and also informs future directions of practice, policy, and research needed to empower and strengthen the critical roles of women in the academy. As women continue to climb the ranks of academia, fostering academic cultures and practices that promote their advancement and well-being are essential to driving institutional change and transformation, as university systems and structures benefit from the innovation, strategic thinking, training, planning, productivity, and overall high-performance quality of women leaders. A continuous commitment to learning how to best support women academicians and leaders will help to minimize barriers to establishing a healthy and thriving academic environment, where professional women can flourish in their higher education roles.

Target Audience

Current and emerging women leaders, as well as those positioned to support their success, will gain important insights from this collection of support initiatives and resources.
