Introduction

Awareness of cultural diversity is an important competency in the globalized world. As a result of globalization, today’s workforce comprises people from different cultures. For people to work in harmony with others that have different cultural backgrounds, it is necessary to understand and respect cultural differences. For this reason, many higher education institutions promote multicultural education and study abroad programs through which students are immersed in culturally different settings outside their countries of birth to have experiential knowledge of the fact that there is much to be learned from other cultures' values, beliefs, and traditions to enhance one’s own worldview.

Objective

Despite the benefits of participating in a study abroad program, the idea of traveling to foreign destinations can be daunting for a person who has never been abroad before. Some people worry about many things because of misconceptions that they have heard or read about some parts of the world. Some people ask themselves the following questions: Will I be safe from diseases? What will I eat? What kind of accommodation will I find there? Are the people hostile or friendly? The book allays anxieties and misconceptions associated with foreign travel by sharing experiences of those that have traveled abroad. Through personal accounts of study abroad participants, the book describes the benefits of experiencing life in culturally different settings.

Target Audience

The target readers of the book are college and university professors and staff that organize study abroad trips, students contemplating taking a study abroad trip, agencies that fund study abroad programs. The target readers also include parents and guardians of students contemplating traveling abroad for study.

Recommended Topics

Each chapter of the book should cover the following subthemes: • An introduction explaining the purpose, destination, and date of the trip. • Highlights of places visited during the trip. • Cultural takeaways • The educational benefits of the trip. • A conclusion summarizing the lessons learned from the experience of traveling abroad.
