Call for Chapters

Proposals Submission Deadline: August 30, 2024
Full Chapters Due: November 30, 2024

Introduction

Despite the in-depth discussion about emergent technologies and AI-generated writing in Higher Education (for example Srivastava & Agarwal, 2024; Beckingham et al., 2024; Lovvorn, 2023; Bringsjord & Ferrucci, 2000), writing centers, as the significant pedagogical space where teaching and learning of academic literacies occurs, are barely invited to this conversation. On the other hand, writing centers are typically the frontline to reflect the institutional concerns about academic integrity issues emerging from the heightened involvement of AI in writing practices in Higher Education. This book therefore will complement the existing titles about AI-generated research writing by introducing writing centers' perspectives and voices to the field. This book will both expand the discussion scope of the topic and enhance the cultural and linguistic diversity in this topic.

Objective

This edited book aims to bridge a collaborative conversation about the impact of emergent technologies (e.g., AI, AR, VR, machine translation) on writing centers and writing pedagogy in Higher Education worldwide. The book aims to map the themes, the concerns and the challenges emerging from different writing centers and their culturally and linguistically diverse responses towards the latest transformation in writing pedagogy. Although some of the urgent concerns and challenges are globally shared, for instance, the ethical and the equity considerations in relation to the level of engagement with AI in writing practices, writing centers' responses demonstrate the diversity strongly tied to the institution's culture, linguistic profile, policies and attitudes towards emergent technologies in academic practices. This book thus facilitates the conversation among writing centers and writing pedagogy scholars around the world, with a balanced emphasis on both global challenges and local solutions in the cutting-edge topic of technology-enhanced writing in Higher Education.

Target Audience

This book has a broad readership among both individual and institutional readers. It will strongly inform the planning, the development, the implementation and the evaluation of various academic supports in universities, colleges, high schools, vocational institutions and other forms of tertiary education providers. This book also has a strong market among English language teachers, teacher educators, academic tutors, language professionals, library and writing center practitioners, and Pedagogy and Literacy scholars.

Recommended Topics

This book aims to include original research, practitioner reports, and case studies focusing on the impact of emergent technologies on writing centers and writing pedagogy in various linguistically-and-culturally-diverse contexts at the tertiary education level. Topics include but not limited to: (1) the latest ethical and equity considerations in AI-generated academic writing; (2) administrative management of writing centers or writing programs; (3) institutional attitude and policy towards technologies; (4) training and assessment of writing advisors and tutors; (5) assessment, management, and improvement of writing centers and writing pedagogy; (6) design, development and implementation of writing center curricula, materials, and services; (7) selection, application, and evaluation of technologies in different writing center or writing pedagogy associated contexts; (8) critical language awareness and methodologies for understanding technology-enhanced writing practices; (9) teaching and learning feedback regarding the engagement with technologies in writing practices; and (10) other related topics that can well fit the book theme.

Submission Procedure
