Introduction

How can poetry support children and adolescents? Why infuse poetry into the classroom? What benefit does the study of poetry bring to students and the K–12 curriculum? Poetry provides opportunities to explore the universal and shared experiences that connect us as human beings. Incorporating poetry into classrooms supports literacy instruction, develops interdisciplinary connections, and fosters compassion. This co-edited book aims to ensure that educators do not neglect poetry for children and adolescents as a part of the curriculum. It also helps educators feel more confident in their understanding of poetry, its relevance to their students’ lives, and its importance in supporting pedagogical connections.

Objective

We are delighted to announce a request for chapter proposals for a forthcoming book entitled Celebrating Poetry Across the K–12 Curriculum. This comprehensive resource will highlight research supporting the integration of poetry into the curriculum. Given the importance of introducing poetry to today’s youth, educators must feel confident selecting well-written poetry as examples and learning how to weave poetry from award-winning poets as part of interdisciplinary connections. This resource will celebrate how teachers, librarians, poets, and others share poetry with children and teens both in and outside the classroom. Furthermore, the book is written by and for practitioners and professionals who want to improve their understanding of the transformative power of poetry for today’s youth.

Target Audience

The target audience of this book will be composed of those who work with K–12 learners, including but not limited to the following: preservice and in-service teachers, librarians, teacher educators, poets, curriculum creators, educational consultants, reading specialists, professional development leaders, and family literacy coordinators. Moreover, the book will provide insights into a wide range of research, pedagogical implications, and perspectives on sharing poetry with children and adolescents.
