Women’s Right To Drive Spark New Turn in Social Movement Research

Saudi Arabia was the only country that banned women from driving, up until June 24, when it was finally discontinued. Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman enacted the historical change to fulfill the 2030 vision to modernize Saudi Arabia. Since the Gulf War, demonstrations and protests for women’s right to drive continued to grow. The women’s right to drive in 2011 experienced a huge spark during the Arab Spring movement, according to CNN. Protesters from Arab Spring used social media to gather and mobilize support, according to Prof. Serpil T. Yuce from the University of Arkansas [CC1], in the chapter, "Bridging Women Rights Networks: Analyzing Interconnected Online Collective Analysis" from Religious Social Movements and Economic Welfare in Modern Turkey.

Scholars, and academics alongside Prof. Yuce have noticed the ongoing online trend approach in collective action in the social movement paradigm. Social media has an influential hold on demonstrations and protests. Individuals commonly acquire knowledge and encouragement from people around them in support of their causes of choice. “These online platforms have also facilitated citizens to engage and participate in various cultural, social and political factors,” said Prof. Yuce [CC2]. The push for women’s rights continue to grow globally today. While the movement was targeted towards Saudi Arabia’s gender biased laws, it received global support.

“No matter how different the reason, principles, objectives of a social movement; no society is isolated from social movement, demand, and change,” said Prof. Cemile Zehra Köroğlu, from Gümüşhane University, author of Religious Social Movements and Economic Welfare in Modern Turkey. The intricacies of social movements over the decade have changed how social scientists study the field. According to Prof. Köroğlu, when assessing recent social movements, social scientists should take the historical background into account as well.

Turkey provides a particularly rich context with high potential for social movements, both with secular and religious aspirations. Religious social movements have shown quite a tense relationship with the state throughout the history of the republic; yet, they have gained power and prosperity through evolving liberal economic policies since the 1980s.

The methods of politics and social activism have taken an online approach. Researchers continue to discover the change in resource mobilization and new social movement paradigms. Individuals, institutions, and lawmakers are in constant need of emerging and innovative research to make informed opinions and decisions.
