Virtual Worlds Digitize the Classroom

By IGI Global on Aug 11, 2010
The allure of the virtual world is captivating classrooms across the globe. Today, universities are taking advantage of online services, providing students with the ability to interact through virtual learning environments or other academically motivated social sites. It's not surprising that corporations would join such institutions in making use of this valuable communications and networking tool. Thanks to its ability to bring dispersed people together in an almost "real" environment for relatively low cost, virtual environments may become the preferred educational arena for corporations.

As an area of growing interest and use, teachers, practitioners, and corporate educators require the latest and most up-to-date information to teach students and instruct employees. Working in collaboration with IGI Global, William Ritke-Jones, Ph.D., (Cybermations Consulting Group, USA) recently released the book, Virtual Environments for Corporate Education: Employee Learning and Solutions. The volume provides a theoretical background for the use of virtual realities in corporate education, focusing on practical applications such as the designing, implementing, and measuring of such technologies.

"[This book is for those] who want to discover how people have used virtual realities for corporate education and who want to talk to other educators about how they might be used."

– Dr. William Ritke-Jones

According to Dr. Ritke-Jones, "Virtual realities give the educator another tool to use in the design, development and implementation of educational programs." He goes further, expressing the benefits of virtual realities in corporate education: "Over the past couple of years, corporations have taken another look at virtual realities not because of their potential for marketing but because of their potential for connecting people. Unlike other technologies, a 3-D virtual reality provides the illusion of space and identity, so a virtual world such as Second Life can accommodate a real time meeting with employees all over the globe interacting within the same space."

By cooperating with international contributors, this Premier Reference Source offers readers a look into the world of virtual realties, demonstrating the most effective learning environments, and providing a foundation for those who want to discover how people have successfully used virtual realities for corporate education. It also draws attention the value and potential advantage of the personalized interactions of virtual realities like Second Life, positioning it above that of "video or audio conferencing".

Virtual Environments for Corporate Education: Employee Learning and Solutions divides into five distinct sections: Foundations, Applications, Designs & Measurements, Connections, and Integrated Technologies. The first provides a foundation for education in virtual worlds. The second displays actual educational events in virtual worlds. The third outlines approaches to designing and measuring virtual world education. The fourth focuses on team training, and the final section illustrates how various technologies can be integrated in order to provide the most effective learning environment.

For Dr. Ritke-Jones, it is clear that this book should be used by those "who want to discover how people have used virtual realities for corporate education and who want to talk to other educators about how they might be used." He recommends that the "book should be used by human resource managers, corporate educators, instructional designers, consultants and researchers," as well as "virtual world designers and programmers will use this book to discover how educators have used and want to use this technology."
