The Truth Behind California’s Plastic Pollution Reduction Plan

By IGI Global on Jun 27, 2024
image of Earth surrounded by plastic bottles According to the Plastic Pollution Coalition, California Senate Bill 54 is failing to hold plastic producers accountable for their current plastic production and reduction methods. The language around what is considered “recyclable” remains largely unclear, leading to most recycled plastic to be left in landfills or dumped in the Global South. Plastic was not meant to be recycled and is often not repurposed.
The Plastic Pollution Coalition argues that plastic producers should not have the authority to label what is recyclable or not, given their history of spreading misleading information about plastic recycling. Environmental organizations like Californians Against Waste, NRDC, and Surfrider have also criticized SB 54 for its vague language that allows loopholes in plastic regulation laws.
As a result, organizations are calling for clearer language and a narrowed focus on creating regenerative systems that target wastefulness more efficiently. The book Intelligent Methods and Alternative Economic Models for Sustainability (ISBN: 9798369314180) provides innovative solutions for the plastic pollution crisis by exploring intelligent methodologies and alternative economic models that aspire to minimize waste and maximize resource efficiency.
