Can We Finally Progress Natural Medicine without Abusing Indigenous Communities?

Treaty Signed After a Decade of Fighting

By IGI Global Scientific Publishing on Jun 6, 2024
image of top view of a microscope surrounded by laboratory instuments With the continuous march of medical exploration in the 21st century comes the newest wave of discovery and patents. In a landmark move for medical research worldwide, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) recently signed its first new treaty in almost a decade. The treaty, which started negotiations in 2001, is the first to include genetic resources and indigenous knowledge. The agreement is touted as being “the best possible compromise” between the search for effective, plant-based modern medicines and the protection of Indigenous intellectual properties.
The treaty aims to ensure that the benefits and contributions derived from research—genetic, medical, or otherwise—are more equally distributed across the board, particularly to groups of people that have been excluded in the past (recent and distant), such as the many Indigenous populations that have traditionally maintained and valuable community knowledge. In establishing clear guidelines and principles, WIPO’s newest treaty promotes continued medical innovation while also upholding important ethical and moral standards.
Harnessing Medicinal Plants in Cancer Prevention and Treatment (ISBN: 979836931647) acknowledges the limitations of modern, synthetic medicines, instead emphasizing the significance of westernized medicine. The book provides researchers, plant biologists, and biotechnologists with a solid foundation in the rising field of sustainable research while exploring the diversity of medicinal plants. The content ranges across several countries, venturing into the roles of medicinal plants in locations such as India, China, and Thailand.
