Taking a Blended Learning Approach to Teaching

By IGI Global on Jun 11, 2010
Although online education is becoming an important long-term strategy for higher learning instructors, blended learning is expected to become an even more significant approach to teaching in the future. Blended learning combines traditional face-to-face instructional activities with appropriately designed online learning experiences.

This phenomenon is even catching on at the high school and junior high levels. Teachers have made course content accessible to students online, allowing them to learn 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Matt Oswald, an algebra teacher from Stillwater Area High School, MN, explains, "We still meet with the students every day, but students can access the information anytime, anywhere."

Inside the classroom, teachers use interactive white boards to record notes and student work, and then digitize it so that other students can have access to it. The technology provides an online quiz, which it corrects, not only providing immediate feedback to students, but also allowing teachers to determine if the material is being understood or if they need to spend some more time on that particular lesson.

Jeff Hudson, a technology coordinator at Stillwater Junior High, MN, values the technology for its propensity towards virtual collaboration. He notes that, "As a student writes a paper, they share it with a friend for suggestions; while at the same time, the teacher can review it that night and make comments" (Source: http://presspubs.com/).

"Indeed, this book of cases celebrates such new journeys [in education]. It's a brave new world and we are creating it."
