Ethiopia completes almost all of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Sustainable Development Goals are the Key to Economic Growth, According to Environmental Studies

By Sharlene Oong on Aug 23, 2018
The United Nations set new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015 to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all, according to the UN website. Until the 2030, SDGs are a new set of "goals, targets, and indicators that the UN member states will be expected to use to frame their agendas and political policies," Guardian stated in their article. Among the nations attempting to achieve the goal, Ethiopia is making early progress to completing almost all of the Sustainable Development Goals target set for 2030, according to the European Union Head of Delegation.

Additionally, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s meeting in Washington DC was well-received by the U.S. Vice President and top-ranked officials of global organizations. Prime Minister Abiy received support from Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of International Monetary Fund (IMF), in economic reforms. “I reiterated the IMF’s commitment to work with the Ethiopian authorities to ensure that the economy achieves high rates of sustainable and inclusive growth to reduce poverty,” she said in a Ventures article.

Based on Ethiopia's progress with their SDGs, the country's economy is predicted to flourish as sustainable development goals have a proven positive implication on the economic growth of various nations. They are action oriented, global in nature and universally applicable,” says Prof. Mangasini Atanasi Katundu from Moshi Cooperative University (MoCU), author of chapter, “Sustainable Development Goals and Their Implication on Economic Growth, An East African Perspective,” from the publication, Handbook of Research on Sustainable Development and Governance Strategies for Economic Growth in Africa.

When nations' goals are implemented accordingly, through proper implementation plans, procedures, and frameworks, they are guaranteed to help those governments foster economic capital. The following approaches include public investment in crucial sectors, prioritizing the elimination of income inequality, creating a special bureau to monitor SDG implementation, and monitoring the sector which employs the majority of the population in different regions, According to Prof. Katundu, the following approaches include:

  • Public investment in crucial sectors.

  • Prioritizing the elimination of income inequality.

  • Creating a special bureau to monitor SDG implementation.

  • Monitoring the sector which employs the majority of the population in different regions.

  • Every step made towards global climate change, including the implementation of SDGs, will carry the potential weight of eliminating further damage to the natural environment. As adaptation is important for society to adjust to global climate change, whether it is planned or unplanned, Prof. Soumyananda Dinda from Sidho-Kanho-Birsha University, author of chapter, “Adaptation to Climate Change for Sustainable Development: A Survey,” in the publication, Handbook of Research on Climate Change Impact on Health and Environmental Sustainability argues. “In the absence of planned adaptation, communities will adapt autonomously to changing climatic conditions, but not without costs and residual damages.” The losses from these massive climate change events indicate patterns of development that remain vulnerable to temporal variations in climatic conditions, according to Prof. Dinda, thus stating the need for society to adapt to the current climate, sustain, and prepare for the future.

Climate change will continue to make its mark in every society and economy if there are no steps taken to prevent the worsening of this phenomenon. Research within sustainable development is needed by policy makers, scholars, and institutions to enact necessary changes to guarantee a better tomorrow for the global population.

There is a growing issue in the research community of authors submitting their articles to gold OA journals (and even hybrid OA/subscription-based journals), and then withdrawing their article after it has been accepted to the journal, effectively utilizing all of the resources of that journal, including the peer review, only to then refuse to publish at the end of the process.
