How is Social Media Changing the Political Landscape?

How Is Social Media Changing The Political Landscape? "Whoever controls the media, controls the mind." -Jim Morrison

Social media has permeated nearly every aspect of our daily lives, in ways we might not even be conscious of. It has changed the way we are perceived and the way we communicate, giving a voice to anyone who chooses to participate in it. It has changed the game for politics, engaging both politicians and citizens in the use of online platforms to offer opinions and insights on candidates and policies.

It would seem to be a helpful political tool, but according to recent news commentary, many disagree. In the Politico Magazine article, How Social Media is Ruining Politics, Nicholas Carr points out how Donald Trump's online rants have garnered millions of social media followers. Such interest might be simply viewers seeking entertainment, but recent polls have shown that Trump's "ability to control the agenda this summer says a lot about the changing dynamics of political races." The public's attention is more focused on entertainment than on political issues, providing indirect support for a candidate who openly provokes and belittles others. Everyone wants to be entertained, but it is important to keep in mind that ultimately we are supporting a candidate who will play a very significant role in our future.

The IGI Global chapter "Impact and Potential of Emerging Technologies for Fostering Democracy" explores how emerging technologies can support various pillars of democracy (freedom of expression and freedom of press, rule of law, human rights, and individual liberty) to strengthen and foster the democratic processes. While there exist substantial evidence that technology provides strong support to democracy, significant issues still exist and need to be addressed for emerging technology to contribute to democracy.

A chapter in the title, Societal Benefits of Freely Accessible Technologies and Knowledge Resources, "Impact and Potential of Emerging Technologies for Fostering Democracy" is written by Amir Manzoor of Bahria University, Pakistan. This chapter is now being offered for open access through the month of July.

There is a growing issue in the research community of authors submitting their articles to gold OA journals (and even hybrid OA/subscription-based journals), and then withdrawing their article after it has been accepted to the journal, effectively utilizing all of the resources of that journal, including the peer review, only to then refuse to publish at the end of the process.
