Singapore, a leading investor in artificial intelligence (AI), has
signed an agreement with the United States military to enhance their AI efforts. During his visit to Washington, Singapore’s Defense Minister Ng Eng Hen highlighted the importance of AI in securing a competitive edge in modern digital warfare. The collaboration will include data sharing, which could provide crucial insights into international shipping and regional waterways, enhancing the understanding of normal and anomalous activities. Radha Plumb, the Pentagon’s chief digital and artificial intelligence officer, praised Singapore as a key technology innovator in the Asia-Pacific region, noting the city's significant AI sector despite its small size.
The agreement with the US follows a recent AI cooperation deal between Singapore and China, focusing on civilian applications. This earlier agreement aims to establish standards for data sharing and create new industries through collaborative efforts. Ian Chong, an associate professor at the National University of Singapore, pointed out the challenges Singapore faces in balancing its AI partnerships with both the US and China. He emphasized the need for clear protocols to prevent sensitive military and critical supply chain data from being shared between the two major powers, ensuring that data sharing mechanisms and systems remain separate and secure.
