Throughout my time with IGI Global, I have learned a lot about the academic publishing industry under the mentorship of individuals who are very familiar with the ecosystem, as well as from conversations with librarians and the relationships I have formed with them.
It is important to me and to IGI Global as a company to facilitate longstanding collaborations with institutional libraries. We strive to ensure that your library is fully aware of your faculty’s research contributions to IGI Global publications, and to keep you abreast of timely resources that meet your institution’s research needs. We recognize the importance of maintaining complete transparency about the research we publish, the acquisitions options, the industry trends that are impacting publishers, libraries, and researchers alike, and more.
As a medium-sized publisher, it can be challenging for us get a seat at the table when it comes to establishing relationships with institutional libraries. It is no secret that the academic publishing industry is faced with monopolization, which presents difficulties for small and medium-sized publishers and negatively impacts diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. Monopolizing academic research is damaging not only for publishers, researchers, and libraries alike, but it also impedes the expansion of the body of knowledge. Limiting who and what can be published, and what resources can be acquired presents a serious lack of inclusion and creates accessibility challenges for both researchers and smaller institutions. While many librarians are tasked with ensuring the content that they acquire is accessible and diverse, it is ultimately up to the publisher to make this possible.
To avoid losing access to independent publishers that run on limited resources compared to larger conglomerates, it is imperative that libraries make time and room for small and medium-sized publishers. Those who are not given a seat at the table are at risk of being phased out of the industry or bought by publishing juggernauts.
The ability to meet with librarians one-on-one is crucial for us to get a full understanding of your institution’s priorities and workflow to effectively collaborate on providing the best resources through a customized plan. IGI Global provides flexibility that other publishers often do not, with unique offerings and arrangements that are tailored to each institution’s needs such as consortia title share agreements, collaborations to provide discounts on our e-Collections, full Open Access agreements, and more.
Please reach out to your regional representative to schedule a brief one-on-one meeting to discuss your library’s holdings, your faculty’s publications, and your institution’s research needs.
