IGI Global participates in the Fourth Peer Review Week event

Save the Date for Peer Review Week 2018

By Emily Mistishen on Aug 16, 2018
Mark your calendars – the Fourth Peer Review Week will be taking place from September 10-15, 2018. This year’s event will focus on diversity in peer review and is celebrating the essential role that peer review plays in maintaining scientific quality.

During the week, IGI Global, an international outreach committee member for Peer Review Week, will be planning various events that will be freely available to the academic community, including:
  • Free Webinar: What Impact Does Diversity Have on Combating Predatory Publishing?
Colby Conway, Managing Editor of Journals, will host a webinar on Wednesday, September 12 at 2 p.m. EST. The webinar will showcase how publishers and researchers can combat predatory publishing and increase the ethical standards of journals. Following this year’s theme, the webinar will also highlight how diversity can help prevent the growing trend of predatory publishing in the academic realm

As a strong advocate for raising the ethical standards and integrity of academic publishing, IGI Global has taken a strong active role in this international campaign. Lindsay Wertman, Managing Director, and Caroline Campbell, Marketing Manager, have been a part of the 2018 planning committee for several months and are excited to announce that this year’s Peer Review Week will be “bigger and better than previous years” as it will be focusing on getting everyone within the academic sphere involved.

Ms. Wertman sheds some light on this year’s theme by explaining, “What many researchers, especially early career researchers, do not think about is how critical diversity is to the peer review process. Diversity across review boards, authorship, and content coverage is so very critical to progressing the highest quality research, and Peer Review Week is a fantastic opportunity to bring publishers, vendors, researchers, and academic institutions together to discuss the most pertinent topics facing scholarly research, publishing, and collection development.”

Globally, Peer Review Week will feature both online and offline events, including webinars, interviews, and social media activities exploring the gender gap, minority representation, country bias, and inclusion. The planning committee is inviting everyone across the globe to join and plan their own events. They have compiled an Event in a Box toolkit which contains materials that are freely available for individuals to use during the week. Publishers, academic institutions, and organizations are encouraged to collaborate and participate in this important event, as well as celebrate diversity.

“It is important not only for publishers to get involved in Peer Review Week, but for all researchers, faculty, staff, and librarians to take an active role,” stated Ms. Campbell. “Only through the involvement of all parties in the academic publishing sphere can positive change occur. With the threat of the degradation of academic and scientific knowledge, this campaign brings awareness on raising the quality of standards in academic publishing and ensures that the community is inclusive.”
