Robotic Firefighters Swarm Warehouses

By IGI Global on Jul 23, 2010
Being a firefighter is admittedly risky. Having more helpers, however, will always make the job a little safer, particularly if the helpers are autonomous robots that don't need to worry about breathing in toxic smoke. The EU funded Guardians project has built a group of robots designed to fulfill this specific need: assisting firefighters. Warehouse fires are among some of the most dangerous kinds of fires because in the large area of a warehouse, firefighters often have problems navigating the area and risk becoming lost. These robots were constructed particularly to assist in notoriously difficult situations like warehouse fires.

One of the most difficult tasks for the robots is to have them cooperate and work together in small or large groups using a wireless communication network. This challenge combined with their pattern of movement, which is based on a flock of birds in flight, makes the robots one of the first projects attempting to apply the research of swarm robotics in a real-life situation. Another challenge to the project has been that a major goal is to have the robot swarm work together with the human firefighters ( http://cordis.europa.eu/fetch?CALLER=FP6_NEWS&ACTION=D&DOC=4&CAT=NEWS&QUERY=0129acfb0129:9e8f:0103f430&RCN=32303).

International Journal of Swarm Intelligence ResearchSwarm robotics, a branch of study involving both artificial intelligence and swarm intelligence, is just one of a variety of important topics covered by the International Journal of Swarm Intelligence Research (IJSIR) (Editor-in-chief Yuhui Shi, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, China), published by IGI Global, an information science and technology publisher. This journal serves as a forum for facilitating and enhancing the information sharing among swarm intelligence researchers in the field, ranging from algorithm developments to real-world applications. Targeting researchers, academicians, students, and engineers, this journal provides innovative findings in swarm intelligence, evolutionary computation, computational intelligence, optimization techniques, and their applications.

The mission of IJSIR is to become the leading international journal in swarm intelligence, nature-inspired optimization algorithms, and their applications. This journal publishes original and previously unpublished articles including research papers, survey papers, and application papers, to serve as a platform for facilitating and enhancing the information shared among researchers in swarm intelligence research areas ranging from algorithm developments to real-world applications. IJSIR is a quarterly journal in its inaugural year. It is reviewed by an international team of experts.
