Are Schools in Danger of Losing Their Local Autonomy?

The Right to Read

By IGI Global on Jun 20, 2024
image of a laptop sitting open against a pile of books Following a lawsuit laid out by an Oklahoma City school district, local school boards in the state of Oklahoma will maintain their right to oversee what books are made available within the public school libraries, rather than handing the decision-making power off to the state’s Board of Education. The case followed shortly after a set of rules implemented in June 2023 banned books and media that contained inappropriate content, wherein the Oklahoma Board of Education claimed the libraries' media contained content that the board deemed to be inappropriate.
Lawmakers say that the laws are meant to protect children and affirm the rights of their parents. These laws often aim to prohibit any discussion of gender expression and sexual orientation within school classrooms. With the ruling in their favor, the Oklahoma City school district stated that the Supreme Court’s decision protected their locally elected school board’s role in determining how library materials are selected and reviewed.
The book Supporting Students’ Intellectual Freedom in Schools: The Right to Read (ISBN: 9781668496558) explores the crucial intersection of intellectual freedom and education. This timely volume offers a comprehensive examination of historical contexts, legal frameworks, and practical strategies for educators to foster open inquiry while navigating challenges like censorship and diverse community expectations.
