Examining Ethical Standards in Scholarly Publishing

Who is Responsible for the Plague of Plagiarism in Academia?

By Brittany Haynes on Oct 2, 2019
In an era of “publish or perish” and copy-and-paste, plagiarism is rapidly taking over the scholarly community. Headlines are being produced each day around the latest plagiarism news, ranging from scholars at Columbia University being guilty of plagiarizing parts of an award-winning book, presidents of universities getting fired, as well as questions about if a new South Africa Copyright bill promotes the idea of intellectual theft.

According to an AAAS Science article, the number of articles retracted due to fraud has nearly doubled since 2000. Although awareness in this trend is increasing, the question remains of who is ultimately responsible for calling out these academic infractions. With ethical standards varying from country to country and only a small portion of the academic community calling out plagiarism, editors, authors, publishers, and the overall academic community are being challenged with fully understanding the “prevalence, causes, and impacts” of this trend.

To assist in how to navigate publishing ethics, IGI Global is continuing to provide the latest research covering academic misconduct, plagiarism, research methods, and related topics. View the related resources below which are all featured in IGI Global’s InfoSci®-Books database:

There is a growing issue in the research community of authors submitting their articles to gold OA journals (and even hybrid OA/subscription-based journals), and then withdrawing their article after it has been accepted to the journal, effectively utilizing all of the resources of that journal, including the peer review, only to then refuse to publish at the end of the process.
