In 2023, we saw sharp increases in wildfires around the world, devastating regions of North America, Europe, South America, Asia, and Oceania. Over 55,000 fires scorched well over 2.5 million acres of land, according to the United States National Center s for Environmental Information in their
Annual 2023 Wildfires Report.Australian scientists recently unveiled a new method for detecting bushfires “in record time”. The project, led by the University of South Australia, developed onboard AI technology for South Australia’s cube satellite, Kanyini. The innovative tech serves as an energy-efficient way to detect fire smoke 500 times faster than the traditional approach.
Using artificial intelligence in conjunction with cube satellites, scientists can now detect bushfires all the way from outer space with highly detailed surface maps created by sensors that capture reflected light from Earth. The satellite, equipped with A.I., can also monitor water quality and land management. Before now, Earth observation satellites typically did not feature onboard technology capable of evaluating the complex, real-time images obtained from space. Scientists hope to use the technology as an early warning system for other types of natural disasters, too.
AI and IoT for Proactive Disaster Management (ISBN: 979-8-3693-3896-4) explores how the combination of Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence technology can revolutionize disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. The book provides academicians, industry professionals, and technology enthusiasts with a closer look at the emerging trends and ethical considerations behind the intersection of AI, IoT, and disaster management.
