Editor Presents at the Symposium on Active Learning for Global Engineers & the Ravensburger Industry Conference

Dr. Patrick Keleher Speaks in Germany & Beijing on Work Integrated Learning

By IGI Global on Dec 3, 2012
Dr. Patrick KeleherDr. Patrick Keleher, university lecturer and IGI Global editor, has recently been traveling the globe, presenting keynote presentations focusing upon his research in authentic learning strategies relating to Work Integrated Learning. His talks emphasize the professional and technical competency development of engineers, ensuring that they graduate with the skill base and experience to be competent and confident global practitioners. In October and November, he spoke at conferences in both Beijing and Germany.

Dr. Keleher was one of eight international keynote speakers from organizations and universities in China, Spain, Australia, and the Philippines asked to deliver a keynote presentation at the inaugural Symposium on Active Learning for Global Professional Engineers in Beijing. This symposium was led by Aston University (UK) and Beijing University of Technology and was held at the Beijing University of Technology. CQUniversity was the only Australian university represented with a keynote speaker at the symposium.

At Germany’s Ravensburg Industry Conference, Dr. Keleher’s keynote presentation highlighted “Key Competencies for Global Practitioners”. It was delivered at the Duale Hochschule - Baden-Wurttemburg (DHBW) Ravensburg Co-operative State University's Ravensburger Industry Conference. The Ravensburger Industry Conference draws together DHBW's Departments of Industry, International Business and Banking, the Lake of Constance and Upper Swabia region's Chamber of Commerce and Industry, current students and alumni of the DHBW, focusing on internationalization while exploring successful strategies and innovative practices global organizations have developed to extend their markets and new manufacturing channels for their products.

Dr. Keleher praised the Ravensburg Industry Conference for the high caliber of presenters and their presentations.

"It was an excellent opportunity to share and explore the strategies developed for successful internationalization and it also provided an excellent mechanism for DHBW to showcase its graduates, who as presenters, share their professional experiences and act as inspirational role models for current students," he said.

Dr. Keleher’s work with Work Integrated Learning began 25 years ago when he completed a postgraduate diploma in Teaching Physics and Mathematics at the University of Queensland. Over the next 12 years, Dr. Keleher’s position as a secondary teacher included the roles of mentor, supervisor and assessor of pre-service science teachers operating within a Work Integrated Learning and Practice Based Learning model. Over the past 13 years as a university lecturer, Patrick has led the development and delivery of programs at undergraduate and postgraduate level with the central theme of a Work Integrated Learning and Practice Based Learning philosophy. In 2009, Patrick undertook sabbatical at the Practice Based-Professional Learning Centre of Excellence in Learning and Teaching (PBPL-CETL) at The Open University, Milton Keynes, UK to further his WIL/PBL research interests and has served as a Fellow of the PBPL-CETL.
