“Open Editing” in Online Learning – Keeping up with this Technology in Your Classroom

By IGI Global on May 13, 2010
Wikis are fast becoming one of the easiest server software pieces to use. They can be found in more than 180,000 of today's classrooms. A wiki is a Web site that allows visitors to freely make changes, contributions, and /or corrections. It can be viewed and modified by anybody with a Web browser and Internet access. This has led to an explosion of "open editing" forms of online learning.

Instructors are engaging students more than ever with this advancement in technology. It is crucial that instructors understand the best strategies for their utilization. A recent article posted on suite101.com presents the top five strategies for using this technology: 1) Collaborative Projects using Wikis allows students to work together in virtual realms outside of a traditional classroom setting; 2) Students Demonstration of Knowledge allows students to create their own original work and present their knowledge on their own page; 3) Online Resources for Classroom Use gives a list of websites that provide appropriate information related to subject content that can be easily accessed by students; 4) Wikis as a Classroom Webpage provides everyday information for students use during the school year which keeps all information centrally located and easily accessible; 5) Wiki Filing Cabinet allows teachers to store files, images, videos, and other information in a special teacher access controlled area of the classroom Wiki ( http://teachingtechnology.suite101.com/article.cfm/5_strategies_for_using_wikis_in_the_classroom#ixzz0l2Zob9YX).

Not only is it important for instructors to understand the strategies for using Wikis in classroom settings, it is also crucial to have an understanding of recent real-life examples of its use. In an effort to continue the research in this branch of educational technology, IGI Global authors Hong Ling and Kathleen Kelsey (both from the Oklahoma State University, USA) have written, "A Case of Using Wikis to Foster Collaborative Learning."

The teaching case discusses a Wikibook project involving graduate students teaching adult education in the American mid-South. Findings from this case challenge idealistic hypotheses that Wiki work, without careful design and implementation, is naturally beneficial. Although Wikis have increasingly been used for collaborative classroom writing and have been hailed as a learning/writing tool that is more powerful than blogs and e-mails, the pedagogical impacts of using Wikis is thus far underrepresented in recent literature.

This real-life example is extremely beneficial to present and future instructors who want to have a better understanding of this technology. It fills the gaps in recent literature by providing design recommendations for educators who are interested in using Wikis to enhance collaborative writing. Cases on Online and Blended Learning Technologies in Higher Education: Concepts and Practices This case is part of a larger publication, Cases on Online and Blended Learning Technologies in Higher Education: Concepts and Practices (Edited by: Yukiko Inoue, University of Guam, Guam). It provides real-life examples and experiences of those involved in developing and implementing the merge of traditional education curriculum and online instruction. A significant supplementary resource for coursework, this advanced publication provides a wide range of the most current designs, methodologies, tools, and applications in blended course teaching.

Mark C. Goniwiecha from the University of Guam describes the book, "The possibilities and progress are limited only by our imagination and creativity. Research, such as that in the present work, serves to analyze, evaluate, assess, and improve some of the new functions, roles, and perceptions. Collaborations, critiques, analyses, and syntheses will develop still further uses, and newer methods and media, on future journeys in education. Indeed, this book of cases celebrates such new journeys. It¡¦s a brave new world, and we are creating it."
