According to a recent U.S. News & World Report article, women are dying twice the rate each year from pregnancy-related issues compared to the 1980s. With an estimated 700 women dying in the United States alone, U.S. hospitals are coming under fire as more women are facing postpartum hemorrhaging, severe hypertension, and preeclampsia.
In response to this rising statistic, thousands of hospitals will adopt new measures outlined by the Joint Commission, a private organization that sets safety standards for hospitals. These new standards are to go into effect in July 2020, and include guidelines for emergency supply kits, practice drills, measuring severely elevated blood pressure, and patient transfer protocols.
