In observance of the recent World Autism Awareness Day, IGI Global highlights the latest advancements and research in ASD intervention.

How the Latest Research is Paving the Way for More Inclusive Practices for Individuals on the Autism Spectrum

By Anne Long on Apr 17, 2019
According to a recent Medical News Today article, in the United States alone, one in every 68 children are born with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). As these children experience the world from a different perspective and often have sensory issues, many parents, teachers, and institutions are often overwhelmed with caring for a child with special needs. However, studies have shown that early diagnosis and intervention can enact healthy practices to encourage the development of communication, social, and cognitive skills, positively impacting life outcomes for children with ASD.

In observance of the recent World Autism Awareness Day and as an international academic publisher focused on inspiring innovation and positive societal change, IGI Global aims to provide valuable research and support to these families, medical professionals, as well as school systems to ensure that the latest advancements in the field are discovered and implemented.

“Although there are a wide variety of treatment options for autism, including educational and behavioral interventions, medications, and therapies, some may lead to great improvement while others may have little [to] no effect,” reported Dr. Richard E. Ferdig, Prof. Hilary G. Amberg, et. al. from the University of Florida, USA, and Kent State University, USA, in their chapter, “Autism and Family Interventions through Technology: A Description of a Web-Based Tool to Educate Fathers of Children with Autism,” published in the IGI Global multi-volume reference publication, Web-Based Education: Concepts, Methodologies, Tools and Applications.

The latest research suggests that parental involvement in intervention programs were successful, especially in helping children with ASD function more independently in the community as adults, when these interventions were initiated at an early age and supplemented with assistive technologies.

Along with their abilities to supplement early interventions, assistive technologies proved to be effective when applied to detection, assessment, diagnosis, training, learning, communication, and mobility in people with ASD at any stage of development. Implementation of video; electronic, augmentative, and alternative communication systems; social stories; and games continue to improve attention, motivation, communication skills, emotional attitude, and motor skills.

However, in their chapter, “Assistive Technologies and Autism Spectrum Disorders,” from the IGI Global publication, Disability Informatics and Web Accessibility for Motor Limitations, Prof. Francisco Alcantud, Prof. Yurena Alonso, et. al. from the University of Valencia, Spain, stated that for assistive technologies to be truly effective they must be individualized, must not create artificial environments, prioritize the most pressing developmental issues, involve family members, and emphasize positive reinforcement.

All aspects of psychological intervention (including a person with ASD’s particular characteristics and needs) must also be considered when achieving objectives that allow people with ASD to develop the skills necessary to face daily life and overcome particular difficulties, said Prof. Vladimir Robles-Bykbaev, Prof. Jorge Galan-Mena, et. al of the chapter, “A Hybrid System to Support the Psychological Intervention for Children With Autism: A Proposal Based on Knowledge Modeling and Intelligent Technologies,” from the International Journal of E-Services and Mobile Applications (IJESMA).

Successful implementation of any psychological intervention for people with ASD means that – when parents, children, and teachers are trained and prepared with the knowledge and means to practice therapies and activities to continuously help individuals with ASD – there is an increase in the quality of life in the child and surrounding support. Parents and teachers, as well as those with ASD, saw increased feelings of competence and success.

In fact, according to research in the chapter above, “Autism and Family Interventions through Technology: A Description of a Web-Based Tool to Educate Fathers of Children with Autism,” when children participated in intervention programs with parental involvement, they benefited from increases in their intelligence, which in turn, improved their ability to participate in inclusion programs and general education classes.

With so many advances and improvements being made, IGI Global is happy to remain committed to disseminating the most timely high-quality research in this emerging field and looks forward to publishing more studies and findings in the future.
