If you need more information to determine if IGI Global is the right fit for you, read on to discover how we make the reviewer experience both rewarding and efficient.
How Does IGI Global use Tech Assistants in the Peer Review Process?
This year, Peer Review Week 2024 continues with the theme, “Intersection of Innovation and Technology,” which fits perfectly into IGI Global’s methods of utilizing technology to support our double-anonymized peer review process. As a technological innovator in publishing, we are known for pushing technology to its potential, and constantly questioning where the limit is, to ensure the most efficient publishing processes. The ability to turn around books and journal articles quickly is due primarily to the use of IGI Global’s eEditorial Discovery® Submission System, which also manages and monitors IGI Global’s double-anonymized peer review process. This technology not only streamlines processes for targeting and assigning relevant reviewers, but also supports researchers to help with adherence to ethical processes.
What are Author and Reviewer Verification and Authenticity Checks?
Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) is a global, not-for-profit organization that provides a unique, persistent identifier for individuals to use as they engage in research, scholarship, and innovation activities, to enable transparent and trustworthy connections between researchers, their contributions, and their affiliations.
At IGI Global, authors submitting manuscripts to an IGI Global book publication are encouraged to connect their ORCID ID to their profile upon submission, and for authors of manuscripts being submitted to an IGI Global Open Access Journal, connecting the ORCID ID is required. It is recommended that reviewers also connect ORCID IDs to their accounts to receive credit for their reviews. The ORCID ID can connect to IGI Global’s submission system for a seamless integration of credit given for authorship and reviewership. This process ensures that IGI Global combats authorship fraud and supports verification of reviewer qualifications and expertise.
Reviews are stored in one high-tech central hub, making it easier to verify through Publons. This means that reviewers get the credit they deserve in every channel.
How does IGI Global Find and Assign Reviewers?
Once a manuscript is submitted through the IGI Global eEditorial Discovery® Submission System, the peer review process is automatically tracked, and the system empowers editors to assign reviewers from their editorial boards, or to identify relevant reviewers based on topics of interest. The eEditorial Discovery® Submission System supports the editors to help them quickly find and assign reviewers with the proper qualifications and research expertise to evaluate the manuscript. This is one of many instances where technology helps us to decrease project timelines and expedite a process without sacrificing quality. Shorter timelines lead to research that is ahead of the industry, giving researchers a competitive advantage.
How Does Reviewer Performance Tracking Help Reviewers?
Each reviewer working with IGI Global receives their own Reviewer Dashboard where all of their submitted reviews are documented and can be rated by editors for thoroughness, quality, and timeliness. This helps editors evaluate the performance of a reviewer when they are considering a promotion for a reviewer to become an Editorial Review Board member, Associate Editor, Managing Editor, etc. This evaluation can also be used in a verification process with the reviewer’s institution to support their standing in the organization by giving recognition and credit to their overall academic performance.
The annual IGI Global Journal Reviewer Award also uses the dashboard to help determine nominations by tracking and documenting all evaluations conducted by reviewers throughout the year. During this process, reviewer performance is assessed based on the volume, quality and timeliness of completed reviews. All editorial board members, including both Editorial Review Board members and Associate Editors, who consistently perform expert reviews over the course of a year are eligible for nomination for this award. This award recognizes outstanding contributions and is presented to top reviewers across IGI Global’s nearly 200+ scholarly open access journals.
No Time Wasted: Smart Transfers for Better Journal Matches
At IGI Global, we believe that a quality manuscript should not go through the rigorous peer review process a second time, even if it is deemed to be out of scope with the journal. We use systems that support the transfer of manuscripts, along with the reviews that have already been performed on it, to more fitting publications. Instead of having to fill a new submission for the manuscript and wait, the original manuscript submission can be transferred for them and can retain the evaluations for the editor of the new publication to review. This preserves and respects the value of the reviewer’s efforts to assess the manuscript.
Are IGI Global’s Systems and Tools Replacing the Work of Humans?
Human oversight is, and likely always will be required in tandem with advancing technologies, and this is true in the peer review process as well. IGI Global does not support using Artificial Intelligence or automation to make decisions for any manuscript at any point of the peer review process. Nor will AI support the process without the careful guidance of human experts. These are tools to assist editors’ decisions and to ensure the peer review process runs efficiently.
Are You Ready to Become a Reviewer for IGI Global?
New members are welcome to apply for membership of an IGI Global review board. Accepted applicants to the review boards will be able to cite work as a reviewer as part of their professional and academic achievements for various professional/research societies and organizations. Take on the opportunity to evaluate the latest research in your area of expertise, while also expanding your dossier.
Become a Reviewer:Apply Today
The reviewer profile determines how you will be assigned, so be sure to provide an accurate list of research areas, up-to- date affiliations, and current contact information when completing your application. Note that incomplete profiles hinder the accurate assessment of your application and will impact your future work as a reviewer. Again, we strongly recommend linking an ORCID iD to your IGI Global profile in application process. This provides a visible record of prestigious board members and allows reviewers to receive credit for their evaluations..
