Improving Conversational Agents Open New Doors

By IGI Global on Aug 18, 2011
Researchers from the Universities of Edinburgh, Cambridge and Sheffield are working on a new project over the next five years to develop new voice-activated devices that interact with people in a natural and intelligent way. According to a recent article from MSN UK, the researchers working on the project will use artificial intelligence technologies to create a system that can comprehend human speech and speak in a voice that mimics natural speech.

Many potential applications have been identified for this technology including better voice-activated computers, a Web search engine for audio, and voice-controlled devices. This £6.2 million project is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and led by Professor Steve Renals of the University of Edinburgh's School of Informatics.

This technology has the potential to be applied to computers and devices that could provide convenience to the user or even greater benefits to specialized users such as the elderly or the disabled. It could also be applied in businesses and organizations for purposes such as making customer service more efficient and streamlined. In order to promote and advance this essential technology, research covering these and related areas is essential. IGI Global, an information science and technology publisher, is therefore proud to announce the release of one of its newest titles, Conversational Agents and Natural Language Interaction: Techniques and Effective Practices, edited by Diana Perez-Marin, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Spain, and Ismael Pascual-Nieto, Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, Spain.Conversational Agents and Natural Language Interaction: Techniques and Effective Practices

By combining agent capabilities with computational linguistics, conversational agents can exploit natural language technologies to improve communication between humans and computers. This book is a reference guide for researchers entering the promising field of conversational agents. It provides an introduction to fundamental concepts in the field, collects experiences of researchers working on conversational agents, and reviews techniques for the design and application of conversational agents. The book discusses the successes of and challenges faced by researchers, designers, and programmers who want to use conversational agents for e-commerce, help desks, website navigation, personalized service, and training or education applications. For readers and researchers who want to further explore the growing field of agent technologies, IGI Global recommends the International Journal of Agent Technologies and Systems (IJATS) (Editor-in-Chief: Yu Zhang, Trinity University, USA). IJATS focuses on all aspects of agents and multi-agent systems, with a particular emphasis on how to modify established learning techniques and create new learning paradigms to address the many challenges presented by complex real-world problems. The journal serves as an inclusive forum for discussion of theoretical and practical issues of intelligent agent technologies and multi-agent systems while bringing together scientists from different areas of computer science as well as researchers from various fields studying similar concepts. For more information on this journal including subscription details and a free sample copy, please visit www.igi-global.com/ijats.
