By IGI Global on Nov 23, 2015
In effort to support the advancement of library technologies and services, IGI Global has implemented the Librarian Profile Series as part of our Library Technology Innovation Program. This series features the profiles of today's leaders and specialists in knowledge management advancement and technologies. For this edition, we are proud to spotlight Ms. Lia Hemphill, Director of Collection Development at Nova Southeastern University.

Name: Lia Hemphill
Position: Director of Collection Development
Library: Nova Southeastern University, Florida USA

How do you consider yourself a technological innovator?

I work closely with our technical services and systems staff to implement changes in cataloging and databases. The catalog is an intrical part of the library and the key inventory control of all the material. The maintenance of the catalog involves all members of the staff. Working with systems is important to maintain the information of library offerings delivered to the users. This includes the adding and deleting of databases and database descriptions. No one works in a vacuum, and the library team works like a well-greased wheel.

What areas of technological innovation do you consider the most exciting?

Recently, I was asked my opinion of streaming video. This is a new era in providing video to the classroom. Libraries need to work with vendors to properly implement this new technology, and so that no one fails in copyright infringements.

What technology-related projects do you see librarians implementing in the future?

Librarians will be using SKYPE and other face-to-face applications to work with students and faculty. As more information becomes available in the electronic format, the library needs to position itself as the primary source of navigation just like a GPS.

What advice would you share with a librarian looking to become a leader in supporting technology advancements?

Know the business community and keep up with who are the Presidents and Vice Presidents. Watch the pricing models and how they are changing. Read what the vendors are working on and do not be afraid to offer your opinion.

There is a growing issue in the research community of authors submitting their articles to gold OA journals (and even hybrid OA/subscription-based journals), and then withdrawing their article after it has been accepted to the journal, effectively utilizing all of the resources of that journal, including the peer review, only to then refuse to publish at the end of the process.
