As a part of IGI Global’s long-standing commitment to corporate responsibility and providing resources in developing nations, IGI Global donated forward-thinking library and information science publications to the University of Aksum (AKU) in Ethiopia including Open Source for Knowledge and Learning Management: Strategies Beyond Tools, Cases on ICT Utilization, Practice and Solutions: Tools for Managing Day-to-Day Issues, and Knowledge Management in Emerging Economies: Social, Organizational and Cultural Implementation

This marks the second year in a row IGI Global has donated publications to developing Ethiopian universities and this year, the international publisher collaborated with Janet Lee, Dean of the Library at Regis University in Denver, Colorado and 2016-17 Fulbright Scholar, to help strengthen the University.

The donated publications will ensure that AKU has quality research that will assist in the professional development of the students, faculty, and staff, and the ultimately will strengthen both the institution and the library collection. Additionally, Lee, a returning Peace Corps volunteer who served in Ethiopia from 1973-76, will be personally assisting the library in strengthening their internal systems.

With the rapid growth of AKU's campuses, there were inherent challenges including a young, sometimes inexperienced staff; insufficient infrastructure; and a lack of sustainable collection development budget. Therefore, the donated books were a very important addition to the collection as they highlighted library funding, resource management, and professional development.

According to Berhuley Kahsay, head of resource development at AKU, the donation of titles from IGI Global was a welcome addition to the AKU library collection. The books were quickly integrated into the collections of the appropriate branches, allowing eager faculty members and students to swiftly implement the new resources into their courses and assignments.

About the AKU Library: The AKU library consists of five branches on three separate campuses that focus on Health Science; Natural Science; Social Science and Technology; and Agriculture.

A sincere thank you to Janet Lee for collaborating with IGI Global for such a worthy cause. More from IGI Global

There is a growing issue in the research community of authors submitting their articles to gold OA journals (and even hybrid OA/subscription-based journals), and then withdrawing their article after it has been accepted to the journal, effectively utilizing all of the resources of that journal, including the peer review, only to then refuse to publish at the end of the process.
