To enhance the academic community and assist librarians in their professional development collaborations, IGI Global attends the annual Charleston Conference in Charleston, South Carolina, as a Diamond Sponsor for the past 11 years. For 2019, Mr. Nick Newcomer, Senior Director of Marketing and Sales, and Mr. Abdoul Amadou, Sales Coordinator for North America, represented the academic publisher at this notable event.
“Each year, we look forward to the Charleston Conference, and this year brought another highly successful event,” stated Nick Newcomer. “It is always exciting to meet with current customers as well as future customers and professionals in the library and information science industry to strengthen collaborations between librarians, publishers, and aggregators. We would like to personally thank everyone who stopped by our booth at the Vendor Showcase and attended our panel session.”
Highlights of the event included:
IGI Global’s panel session, “
Twelve Danishes for the Price of One: The Benefits of Bulk Acquisitions for Libraries
”
As librarians face limited resources, shrinking staff, and flat or declining budgets, IGI Global along with directors from EBSCO and Gale-Cengage Learning and an industry-leading librarian at Texas State University, provided information on how to receive maximized return on investments through bulk acquisitions at this panel session. Speakers on this panel included:
Mr. Nick Newcomer, Senior Director of Sales and Marketing, IGI Global
Mr. Scott Ahlberg, Chief Operations Officer, Reprints Desk
Mr. John Elwell, MLIS/MA, Director of Content Strategies at EBSCO Books
Mr. Scott Pope, MLS, Continuing Resources Librarian at Texas State University
Ms. Sara Tarpley, Director of Academic Product Sales at Gale-Cengage Learning
Mr. Scott Ahlberg acted as moderator for this panel session, and Mr. Scott Pope opened up the presentation by discussing how librarians can benefit from bulk acquisitions. Mr. John Elwell and Ms. Sara Tarpley continued by presenting the aggregator perspective on this topic. Finally, Mr. Nick Newcomer closed the presentation by explaining the specific benefits for libraries of collaborating with a publisher directly to receive benefits such as title recommendations and IGI Global’s
Open Access Fee Waiver (Read and Publish) Initiative
, which provides institutions with 100% subsidies toward OA APCs. The event was well-attended and was followed up by an energetic Q&A session.
The Vendor Showcase
Another notable event was the Vendor Showcase, where IGI Global spoke to leading librarians about their library holdings and specialized discounts; customized solutions for accessing the timeliest, peer-reviewed content; updates on current customers and their needs; IGI Global’s international sales team; and the
InfoSci-Databases
, including
InfoSci-Books
s (5,300+ e-books) and
InfoSci-Journals
s (185+ e-journals). Additionally, IGI Global had the opportunity to award their
annual Academic Librarian Sponsorship Award
to Ms. Elyssa Gould, Head of the Acquisitions and Continuing Resource Department at the University of Tennessee.
IGI Global was pleased to meet with everyone during the Charleston Conference, and looks forward to future collaborations with the library community.
