All around the world and with a click of a button, researchers will be in collaboration speaking about feminist-oriented research during the 2017 Feminist Scholars Digital Workshop. The free workshop will take place on June 2-18 via the online application, Slack, and will include two keynote speakers and an opportunity for researchers to join the discussion on feminism.

Feminist-oriented research is defined as any research that discusses or contributes to feminist or gender-equality conversations, explained Abigail Scheg, author and contributing author of various IGI Global publications including Reforming Teacher Education for Online Pedagogy Development and Exploring Perspectives on Social Media in Higher Education and the Director of Social Media for the workshop. The 2016 U.S. election really placed a spotlight on many of these discussions that have been taking place for many years, but now they’ve found their place in the sun.

The workshop, hosted by Humanities, Arts, Science and Technology Alliance and Collaboratory (HASTAC) and James Madison University School of Writing, Rhetoric and Technical Communications, is a platform for researchers, students, professors, para-academics and non-academics to come together and asynchronously upload their research projects for peer review and feedback.

On Monday, June 12 and Thursday, June 15, Ms. Jenny Ungbha Korn, a scholar at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Dr. Erin Frost, Assistant Professor at East Carolina University, will host the keynote workshops.

Korn’s session, Intersectional Feminist Solidarity in Networked Practices: Shared Online Experiences and Strategies Involving Feminist Identity and the Digital, will focus on how digital practices influence intersectional feminist work. While Frost’s session, Feminist Credibility: Negotiating Subjectivity in Public Spaces, will highlight how women’s experiences are often treated with less credibility in the realm of research and academia.

“[The FSDW] is a platform for individuals to share their research and ideas or listen, participate and learn more about research and ideas that they may never have considered,” commented Scheg. “It is an outstanding professional development opportunity no matter your research interests.”
