Exploring the Role of Emotional Intelligence in Healthcare Human Resource Management

By IGI Global on Aug 8, 2023
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in understanding the impact of emotions within organizations. However, one area that has been largely overlooked is the role of emotional intelligence in human resource management within healthcare organizations. To address this gap, the authors of a chapter conducted a comprehensive and systematic review of literature spanning from 1960 to 2020, specifically focusing on the impacts of emotional intelligence in the healthcare sector. Their objective was to explore and shed light on the effects of emotional intelligence on healthcare outcomes, job stress, emotional labor, and the potential for emotional intelligence to provide a competitive advantage for healthcare organizations. "Use of Emotional Intelligence in Human Resource Management in Healthcare Organizations for Competitive Advantage" not only highlights the need for further research in this area but also proposes a novel conceptual framework for the marketing of emotional intelligence in the healthcare sector. By discussing literature gaps, examining relationships among existing works, and analyzing current trends, the authors provide valuable insights into this important topic, bridging the gap between theory and practice in the field of emotional intelligence in healthcare organizations. See below where chapter author Prof. Deeba Hasan answers our questions on the importance of the chapter.

Contributing Author Question & Answer

How does your professional background support your ability to be an authority on this book's coverage?

Prof. Hasan: With over 15 years of experience as a healthcare professional, my professional background provides a strong foundation for establishing authority on the subject matter of this chapter. Additionally, my academic focus and expertise in organizational behavior further enhance my ability to contribute to this topic. For the past seven years, I have been actively writing on emotions and related topics, solidifying my knowledge and understanding in this area. Combining my extensive experience in the healthcare field with my academic pursuits, I am well-equipped to contribute valuable insights and expertise to this chapter.

What was the driving force or motivation for starting your chapter?
Prof. Hasan: I am a healthcare (HC) professional and am privy to the stress that HC workers face every day. Healthy outlets to vent said stress are few and far between. Often enough, I have wondered about human psychology in how different people react to similar situations with vastly different outcomes. I figured it has to do with emotions and how we pay heed to them in our daily lives that decide our personal outcomes. Hence, the motivation for starting this project.

What specific problems does your chapter address?

Prof. Hasan: My chapter is a systematic review of literature on the impacts of emotional intelligence in the healthcare sector spanning sixty years from 1960 to 2020. It aims to explore and raise pertinent questions on the impacts of emotional intelligence on healthcare outcomes, job stress, emotional labor, and linkages of emotional intelligence with a competitive advantage for healthcare organizations.

How does your chapter provide a solution to these problems?

Prof. Hasan: The chapter first provides a comprehensive understanding relating to the significance of emotional intelligence (EI) in the HC sector. It identifies that emotions and EI play a significant role in HC outcomes. Secondly, it identifies the role that emotional labor plays in the HC scenario. Though emotional labor is a part of HC services, it does end up taking a toll on HC professionals. Interestingly, surface acting is associated with greater fatigue as compared to deep acting. A high EI has been found to help mitigate end fatigue significantly. The chapter identifies the emotional dimensions of human resource management in HC, and in reiterating that emotion regulation can become an automatic process with practice. A notable finding has been that EI has not been marketed as a soft skill in the HC industry. This is surprising given the strong linkages of EI with a competitive advantage for organizations. A major contribution of this work is the proposal of a novel conceptual framework for the marketing of EI in the HC sector that highlights approaches that can be taken to market EI to HC organizations. Of these, digital content streaming, utilizing social media, digital noticeboards, and scrupulous collaborations make some of the notable approaches.

What special organizations, or other professional affiliations give you experience in the areas covered by this book?

Prof. Hasan: My experience as an active practitioner in the health services, as well as my academic background of working in human behavior in organizations gives me experience in the areas covered by this book.

Have you been recognized for academic excellence or other related achievements in this field of study?

Prof. Hasan: I started my academic journey in the field of emotions seven years back as a student of Master of Philosophy (M. Phil.) in Health and Hospital Systems Management. I was the topper of the course in each semester with a perfect 10 CGPA. I have published in prestigious journals and presented papers in international conferences like the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad, Indian Academy of Management, Indian Institute of Science management conference, and in the Oxford Conference Series. In 2022, I was selected as a delegate for the prestigious Harvard Project for Asia and International Relations Conference which is Harvard University’s largest annual student event in Asia. The selection was highly rigorous and I was selected from across sixty countries to participate in an open forum with international leaders.

There is a growing issue in the research community of authors submitting their articles to gold OA journals (and even hybrid OA/subscription-based journals), and then withdrawing their article after it has been accepted to the journal, effectively utilizing all of the resources of that journal, including the peer review, only to then refuse to publish at the end of the process.
