This situation has increased the need for online education platforms. Although videoconference platforms such as Zoom and Google Meet became popular to fulfill the need, these platforms have some drawbacks. The majority of students are not active and cannot take a proactive role during the lectures. Furthermore, they stay idle and get bored on the waiting rooms of these platforms. To fill this gap, an extendable functioning waiting room was created by using ASP.NET framework via Visual Studio platform.

What was the driving force or motivation for starting your chapter?

Prof. Kirli: I was a student when our project started. Before this project started, when Covid-19 spread around the world in 2020, online education started, and I observed Turkish students’ attitudes toward online education. One of the main problems was about the “waiting room” feature for students as a gap. I thought that I could design and develop an” Extendable Functioning Waiting Room” solution instead of a “Waiting Room.” When I took a graduation thesis lesson, I told this idea to Dr. Cagla Ozen the head of the Department of Information Systems and Technologies at Yeditepe University, and she was also my thesis advisor (and became my colleague in this chapter then), she said, “This project can be published as a chapter or an article.” I presented this graduation thesis when I graduated from Yeditepe University in the Department of Information Systems and Technologies in Turkey, and Dr. Ozenfound me a book chapter called for the “Community Engagement in the Online Space” book project. I accepted this invitation, and we quickly prepared a chapter called offer writing; we were accepted. As far as I observed, this is the first research in the world of academic history, so this was a driving motivation for starting this chapter as well.
What specific problems does your chapter address?
Prof. Kirli: In terms of online education platforms, the “Waiting Room“ feature in Zoom and Google Meet was a main specific problem for students and indirect teachers. Technology is accelerating and we need to keep up with this speed. If students continue to wait, this situation will continue to be reflected in their lessons as inertia. Moreover, our solution applies not only to the online education sector but also to other online sectors. Therefore, the address of our chapter will be valid for more than one sector in the future.

How does your chapter provide a solution to these problems?

Prof. Kirli: In order to overcome “Waiting Room” problem, I have designed and developed “An Extendable Functioning Waiting Room” by using ASP.NET, C# and Visual Studio. In this chapter, we put emphasis of User Experience (UX) and User Engagement so that students can be comfortable on our project.

How does your professional background support your ability to be an authority on this chapter's coverage?

Prof. Kirli: I worked in 5 different internships (in Sales Representation, IT, CRM Development, Software Development, and Web Development sectors). I also indirectly participated in 2 non-governmental organizations (about Networking and Sustainable Development Goals). Especially my last compulsory internship (Web Development Internship about ASP.NET Web Form, ASP.NET MVC, and ASP.NET Web API projects) provided this project idea, and I decided to work on this project’s coverage.

How long have you been working in a related field to the topic coverage?

Prof. Kirli: I’ve been working this topic coverage for more than 1.5 years. When looking at our chapter, I want to specially thank Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cagla Ozen, because she gave me a different experience opportunity by giving this chapter call.

Kaan Kirli
Kaan Kirli graduated from Yeditepe University in the department of Information Systems and Technologies in Turkey. He is a Jr. Frontend Developer and Published Author. His current field is about Online Education Platforms. He also has five different internship and two non-profit society experiences about software development, web development and human networking.

Cagla Ozen has taken her Ph.D from Computer Science Department of University of York, UK. She has more than 40 publications and one of her publications awarded as Outstanding Paper Award Winner at the Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2011. Her research interests are user experience, user interface, technology adoption and IoT.
