Innovation never stops in the world of coatings and surface treatments. Engineers are constantly refining techniques to combat tribological damage, ensuring superior wear resistance and optimal lubrication in every application. Whether it's manufacturing, bio implants, machinery, or harsh environments, understanding tribology is crucial. To gain deeper insights into this evolving field, let us talk to Omid Sharifahmadian, the editor of the book
Handbook of Research on Tribology in Coatings and Surface Treatment. Sharifahmadian will share his expertise and perspectives on tribology, plasma processing, and coating.
Prof. Omid Sharifahmadian Answers Our Questions
Prof. Sharifahmadian: A multidisciplinary discipline called tribology studies lubrication, friction, wear mechanisms, and other tribological phenomena. To extend human life, bio-tribology examines the ways in which biological systems interact with one another. Tribo-corrosion is an additional area of research that focuses on the mechanical interactions and electrochemical/chemical reactions that take place in a corrosive environment between various tribo-system components. In order to thoroughly understand the tribological mechanisms in atomic and molecular level interactions, a new field of study known as nano-tribology has developed. The interdisciplinary field of tribology has advanced significantly over the last few decades. The development of tribology has been expanded to the automotive, aeronautical, geological, and even ecological domains, which may soon become interesting areas of research
What percentage of the world's total energy consumption is caused by tribological contacts?
Prof. Sharifahmadian: Tribological contacts are responsible for 25% of the energy used globally, which has a substantial effect on both the economy and the environment.
Which tribology studies are covered in this book?
Prof. Sharifahmadian: It covers a variety of tribology investigations, such as lubrication, biotribology, high-temperature tribology, tribo-oxidation, and tribo-corrosion.
What are the main sections of the book?
Prof. Sharifahmadian: The book is categorized into three sections. The first section of the book discusses the use of various thermal spray processes to produce a wear-resistant coating for a variety of operating circumstances, such as high temperature and corrosive environments. The second part of the book discusses thin films and surface treatments that can increase a material's wear resistance and decrease friction. This section includes a detailed explanation of the electrodeposition, sol-gel, physical vapor deposition (PVD), plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition (PACVD), and the processes that affect the tribological behavior of the materials. The final section, which discusses surface-functionalized metal foils, metallic glasses, and two-dimensional lubricants, is primarily concerned with the tribological aspects of these advanced materials.
