Does Social Media Really Influence Politics?

By IGI Global on Nov 1, 2016
Does Social Media Really Influence Politics? With 12.8 million Twitter followers, it's safe to say that Donald Trump has the world's attention. Especially in the case of the upcoming election, it is undeniable that social media has become an important platform for campaigning and political discussion. But how has it changed politics? Is the change helpful or harmful? It is debated whether online political discussion educates people in making better voting decisions, or breeds confusion and dissension in online forums.

The article "Empowering and Disempowering Aspects of New Media Networking and Digital Democracy" describes what is currently known about new media networking (NMN) and political participation within contexts of digital democracy, what empirical patterns have occurred over time regarding Digital Divide gaps, and what appears be emerging as a new set of gaps- gaps in networking. Authors from New Mexico State University, USA, Kenneth L. Hacker and Eric L. Morgan, review major claims in this area which appear to have the most empirical support. They then bring in the data and theory concerning power law distributions for new media and social media usage, particularly in light of the continued faith in these technologies to enhance digital democracy and e-government. Finally, Hacker and Morgan also address why these distributions tend to show inequalities of contribution despite equalities of access.

This research article is featured in the International Journal of Technology Diffusion, an international journal publishing original scientific and quality research articles on management information systems, technology diffusion, and business systems application, exploring aspects of e-commerce, e-government, and mobile applications. As a forum of multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary dialogue, it addresses research on all aspects of innovation diffusion in the field of business computing technologies and their past, present, and future use.

There is a growing issue in the research community of authors submitting their articles to gold OA journals (and even hybrid OA/subscription-based journals), and then withdrawing their article after it has been accepted to the journal, effectively utilizing all of the resources of that journal, including the peer review, only to then refuse to publish at the end of the process.
