How to Deal with Online Victimization and Bullying

By IGI Global on Oct 17, 2016
How to Deal with Online Bullying The first studies in analyzing bullying and the effects of victimization were published in the early 1970's, by research professor Dr. Dan Olweus. Since that time, Dr. Olweus has invested nearly forty years in specialized research on the topic, developing programs to control and reduce bullying. Dr. Olweus defines bullying in his book, Bullying at School: What We Know and What We Can Do, as: "A person is bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons, and he or she has difficulty defending himself or herself."

In a continuation of this research, Lucy R. Betts of Nottingham Trent University, UK, analyzes the introduction of digital technologies into this equation, investigating the concept of cyber bullying. The Internet has made bullying more accessible to aggressors, creating a more passive approach that is nonetheless immensely destructive. "Cyber Bullying Behaviours," a chapter featured in the Encyclopedia of Information Science and Technology, Third Edition, explores how digital technologies have changed the bullying landscape, and the psychosocial connotations that effect both the bully and the victim.

Tips for dealing with bullying (from Teaching Tolerance.com):
- Tell an adult. Sometimes you may have to tell more than one trusted adult.
- Ask your friends to help you. There is safety in numbers.
- Practice what to say the next time you're bullied.
- Be cool in the moment, stay calm and confident. Don't show the bully that you're sad or mad.
- Ignore the bully; walk away or get offline.
- And remember: Fighting back can make bullying worse.
