Author's Question & Answer
How does your professional background support your ability to be an authority on this book's coverage?
Prof. Green: With over 33 years of experience as a registered nurse and more than 28 years as a licensed clinical social worker, my professional background strongly supports my authority on the coverage of this book. The combination of these roles has provided me with extensive knowledge and expertise in healthcare and social work, enabling me to understand the subject matter deeply. Through my decades of practical experience, I have developed a comprehensive understanding of the complexities and nuances associated with the topic. My longevity in the field has allowed me to witness and adapt to evolving trends, staying up-to-date with the latest developments and research. This substantial background equips me with the necessary skills and insights to offer authoritative analysis and perspectives on the book's coverage.
What was the driving force or motivation for starting this book project?
Prof. Green: The observing of health inequities in the education of health professionals in assessments, direct care of patients’ skin and hair, lack of use of resources to foster communications with inguistic diversity, and discomfort with communication by health care professionals and providers in interacting with persons who look and behave differently than themselves, were the motivations for my writing of a book on health disparities.
What specific problems does Examining and Solving Health Disparities in the United States address?
Prof. Green: The book addresses affordable access to health care and preventative factors (e.g., food deserts and ease of access to liquor stores in low income neighborhoods), inequity in health care information provided to diverse consumers, and bias in health care research.
How does the book provide a solution to these problems?
Prof. Green: There are many solutions to health disparities that the book discusses. An example is education about community access to farm fresh foods at discounted prices and growing a community-based garden.
What do you think about publishing this book changed about this field of study?
Prof. Green: This book promotes awareness of health disparities not only for healthcare professionals, but health care consumers. Educated consumers can make change happen at local and federal levels, and also protect themselves from becoming victims of healthcare systems’ dysfunction.
What special organizations, or other professional affiliations give you experience in the areas covered by this book?
Prof. Green: In addition to my extensive experience in the areas covered by this book, I have served on the boards of the Connecticut Nurses Association, Connecticut League of Nursing, and the Connecticut National Social Workers Association. These professional affiliations have provided valuable insights and enhanced my expertise in nursing and social work. Furthermore, I have been recognized for academic excellence with the Aavo Rakfeldt Memorial Lecturer award for my work on "Grief and Bereavement During COVID-19." This achievement demonstrates my relevant expertise in the field of social work.
