Hear from Prof. Martin-Neira, Expert in Social and Media Studies

Why is it so Challenging to Identify Optimal Channels for Science Journalism in the Digital Age?

By IGI Global on Aug 16, 2023
With almost a decade of experience in the field of science and technology, Prof. Juan-Ignacio Martin-Neira has actively engaged in numerous endeavors, which have provided them with valuable insights. Over the years, he has cultivated a profound understanding of the evolving landscape. With a focus on digital communication and emerging technologies that has allowed him to remain closely connected to these subjects. In light of the challenges faced by science journalism in today's digital ecosystem, particularly during the pandemic era and the widespread influence of social networks, he recognizes the pressing need to identify optimal channels of information. Consequently, the chapter authors have delved into the realm of transmedia narratives and explored how science journalism can integrate technologies, narratives, and formats to enhance content delivery. To address this issue, Prof. Martin-Neira's chapter "Digital Journalism and Transmedia Narratives in the Communication of Science," proposes an analysis model to evaluate the extent of transmedia innovation and advancement in science journalism, along with practical guidelines and recommendations for its successful implementation.

Get to Know Prof. Juan-Ignacio Martin-Neira and his work in Digital Transformation

How does your professional background support your ability to be an authority on this book's coverage?

Prof. Martin-Neira: I have worked in the area of science journalism for 9 years, participating in various actions, both in the press, university teaching and institutional communication, in addition to a couple of investigations on the subject. In addition to the skills and experiences of my authors, especially on the use of new technologies for communication and dissemination, we can consider ourselves relevant specialists in the field.

What was the driving force or motivation for starting your chapter?
Prof. Martin-Neira: Knowing which are the best ways to inform in the digital ecosystem has become a great challenge for science journalism, especially in times of pandemic and where social networks have led to greater dissemination and immediacy. Increasingly, new actions are emerging that promote a reinvention of the profession, through disruptive actions, such as communication via transmedia narratives, and that was the main motivation to develop this research.

What specific problems does your chapter address?

Prof. Martin-Neira: The application of transmedia narratives in science should focus on users as receivers, but also as content creators. It can be said that, in order to multiply the expansion of the stories that are broadcasted, it is essential to use social networks, since they allow greater viralization and dialogue with audiences. Therefore, spaces should be sought for audiences to imagine and produce, to feel part of the narrative, and to contribute to the construction of the story, with their comments and their own visions, and this chapter generates an updated proposal on the subject.

How does your chapter provide a solution to these problems?

Prof. Martin-Neira: A classification of essential elements that must be present to consider science communication under transmedia modalities is proposed. It invites to generate disruptive actions for the popularization of science, i.e., it occurs when there is a break with respect to traditional communication formats, with an optimal use of multimedia, hypertextual contents, with high levels of interactivity, expansive, that promote co-creation, the fight against misinformation and the translation of scientific language.

What special organizations, or other professional affiliations give you experience in the areas covered by this book?

Prof. Martin-Neira: Given my emerging new work remit I shall have now worked at arguably the two most well known transnational higher education providers in China. I have also presented at many of the most prestigious domestic institutions, all of which have an international remit given the nature of undergraduate and postgraduate institutions. I’ve also previously worked at an acclaimed 211 university here.

Have you been recognized for academic excellence or other related achievements in this field of study?

Prof. Martin-Neira: I have gained valuable experience in the areas covered by this book through my involvement with various organizations and educational institutions. I have studied or worked at esteemed institutions such as the University of Granada in Spain and the Universities of La Serena and Católica del Norte in Chile. Additionally, I have a solid practical background, having served as the communications lead for a science outreach project of the Ministry of Science of Chile for seven years. In terms of recognition for my academic excellence and related achievements, I was honored to receive the prestigious National Research and Development Agency (ANID)/Human Capital Subdirectorate/Chile Foreign PhD Grants scholarship in 2020. This recognition was granted to me based on a research project I proposed, which focused on investigating the development of Chilean science journalism in the digital ecosystem. This scholarship not only provided financial support but also offered an invaluable opportunity to further my studies and make meaningful contributions to the field of science journalism in Chile.
