Cases Illuminate Facets of Institutional Research

By IGI Global on Dec 13, 2011
Institutional Research (IR) provides university and college administrators with essential information about how they can work to make their institutions more effective. This field, however, has a rather dry reputation, argues the editor of one of IGI Global's newest casebooks.

"Books on IR are a dry breed," writes Texas Tech University Professor Hansel Burley in the Preface to his book, Cases on Institutional Research Systems. "After an Internet search, a quick read on any set of titles assures one that these books are not for the uninitiated. […] However, the perspective of Cases on Institutional Research [Systems] provides a more expansive survey of the landscape of institutional research scholarship."

A highly accessible book, Cases on Institutional Research Systems discusses themes such as policymakers and decision-making, data analysis, methods of reporting data, collegiate administrative systems, data gathering techniques, and accreditation systems. "The greatest contribution of cases came from folks who were involved in assessment of student learning," writes Dr. Burley. "Even several cases not directly involved in assessment possess some tangential relationship to the idea." He continues,

"In today's higher education, regional accrediting bodies and higher education coordinating boards drive much of the assessment. The underlying issue is accountability, especially accountability designed to help higher education institutions remain effective and continuously improve."

Dr. Burley recounts that in many instances, the scholars writing these cases were "intimately involved" in experiences described. "The aim of the cases is not generalizable truth, but truths, nonetheless, that one can take from someone else's description of their experience," he writes. "These cases are not formal, anthropological cases either. However, the reader will find that IR cultural norms do emerge, along with the values, attitudes, and motives of the writers."

IGI Global recommends this casebook as an excellent resource for professors seeking to enlighten their students about the many diverse facets of institutional research and the many levels of participation through higher education. Cases featured in this book were contributed by experts from throughout the United States and Romania and include:

In his own case study, " African Americans and Planned Resilience: In Search of Ordinary Magic," Dr. Burley and his co-authors write, "Our findings suggest the promise of such restorative attention that empowers communities to develop interventions to help children considered at-risk." He continues, "Community-based interventions such as mentoring programs would appear to be pivotal in developing the social competence and dispositions that may be considered associated with resilience in students. It is possible interventions such as these that may enhance resilience in students and contribute to the continuing study of resilience."
