Can Healthcare Technologies Heal Patients and the Economy?

By IGI Global on May 21, 2010
The European Commission is putting its economic recovery hopes in the hands of e-health experts. The EC's commissioner for Digital Agenda, Neelie Kroes, spoke recently at the eHealth 2010 Conference, stating that the utilization of e-health systems should have a positive influence on joblessness and cost of healthcare, "Improving e-health systems is one of the best ways we can address this challenge," she said.

The EC believes that allowing individuals more access and freedom to their health information will improve efficiency, cut costs, and create new healthcare positions. Kroes went on to explain, "Already today, people go and look for health information on the Internet – often before they even speak to their doctor. Some say we should fight this trend; I say we should make the most of it! Simply, patients must now find their doctor on the Internet. And the proof that this works is in our early success with telemedicine" (www.eweekeurope.co.uk/news/e-health-key-to-europes-economic-recovery-5871).

IGI Global, an information science and technology publisher recognize this healthcare phenomenon and provide supporting research in one of their newest releases, Biomedical Knowledge Management: Infrastructures and Processes for E-Health Systems (edited by Wayne Pease, University of Southern Queensland, Australia; Malcolm Cooper, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, Japan; and Raj Gururajan, University of Southern Queensland, Australia).

The editors of this timely publication explain that "key challenges facing healthcare providers today include an aging population, demanding patients, medical errors and rising costs. These challenges are now being addressed through the application of practical solutions to operational problems and the development of more responsive and efficient health policy using e-health techniques."

This book examines the development of e-health from a number of perspectives including historical, policy and social viewpoints, and describes the current state of play in terms of e-health research and the development of innovative ICT systems and services that process, integrate and use all relevant biomedical information for improving health knowledge.

It also provides the reader with up-to-date knowledge of the e-health practices related to prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and personalization of health care in a number of jurisdictions around the world.

Covering aspects of e-health such as client-based treatment, data mining methods in medical records, mental health management, and web-decision support systems, this innovative publication includes the most up-to-date and relevant issues facing healthcare and e-health today.
