Biomedical Engineers Provide Patients with Peace of Mind

By IGI Global on Oct 22, 2010
Have you ever worried that medical treatments are not being effective? Biomedical Engineering researchers at Drexel University are taking steps to allow diabetic patients a bit more assurance that healing tactics are worth the cost, effort, and time.

Diabetic wounds can vary in size, shape, and severity. "We have an epidemic of diabetics in this country … I particularly, coming to Hahnemann [Hospital] and the wound healing program sponsored by Drexel, have seen tons of diabetics over the years," Drexel Professor Michael Weingarten said. "Traditionally people have big wounds, and a lot of expensive technologies are applied to them, but how do we judge that they're working?"

Weingarten and his colleagues in the Biomedical Engineering department, along with researchers from the Drexel College of Medicine, have recently developed a device using near-infrared spectroscopy, enabling researchers to gauge the healing progress of diabetic wounds and judge the effectiveness of particular treatments. The absorbed and scattered infrared light is measured to determine the degree of tissue healing, giving doctors the opportunity to see wound healing potential "about 50% earlier than with other methods." Collaborations between engineering and medicine continue to grow and develop, as technological advancements allow for greater efficiency in patient care. In order to fulfill research demands in this area, IGI Global, an information science and technology publisher, has recently released, Biomedical Engineering and Information Systems: Technologies, Tools and Applications, by Drs. Anupam Shukla and Ritu Tiwari, both researchers at ABV-Indian Institute of Information, India, presents the latest developments in diagnostic tools, decision support systems, and intelligent devices that impact and redefine research in and delivery of medical services.

Advancements in cryopreservation, microfluidics, electromagnetic fields, and micro-electro-mechanical system technologies are highlighted and explored in this advanced text, in addition to discussions of diagnostic, treatment, and patient-focused devices. Inclusion of ethical, administrative, and business aspects of biomedical engineering create an interdisciplinary reference, relevant to all facets of this rapidly growing field.
