Adaptive Software Helps the Disabled Travel

Frequent users of the Paris Metro system will now find traveling a little easier. Ryerson University's Digital Media Zone (DMZ) and Sweden's Appear Networks have partnered to create the Mobile Transit Companion, an application for mobile phones to help passengers navigate the Paris Metro system. Users who download the free software can set up a user profile to have certain notifications sent to them. The adaptive software delivers up-to-date, custom data to each passenger. The leader of the project, Hossein Rahnama, Ryerson University, Canada, says of the adaptive technology, "we see a very niche use for context-aware computing in public transit and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)."

While the software is available to anyone who might find it useful, it is aimed primarily at passengers with disabilities. The application has a speech-enabled, gesture-driven user interface for blind users and includes information specifically helpful to passengers with limited mobility or other disabilities. The notifications user can choose include the locations of station elevators and Metro transfer points, updated schedules for connecting trains, available services at particular locations, and more. Complementary to this, we aim to provide worldwide readership to novel effective techniques to design, develop and maintain adaptive-and-dependable systems, i.e. software and devices that are prepared to continue the optimal distribution of their service despite the occurrence of potentially significant and sudden changes or faults in their infrastructure and surrounding environment."
