Transboundary lakes have always played a significant role in the development prospects and welfare of border areas. The international hydrological basin of the Prespa Lake, a protected area in three neighboring countries, Greece, Albania, and North Macedonia, is a typical example of a transboundary lake basin of exceptional importance. The empirical investigation of transboundary water management and sustainability cooperation in the Prespa, which adds to the limited international research in transboundary lakes, was carried out via six structured interviews, two per country, to identify the strengths and weaknesses as well as the opportunities and threats in the Prespa basin, and highlight the significance of transboundary cooperation towards sustainable development and social prosperity between riparian Municipalities. The results obtained have significant implications for all stakeholders in the Prespa basin, as they highlight the need to organize joint actions and generate new development strategies and products, such as alternative forms of tourism.
