Abstract

COVID-19 has enforced work from home (WFH) in all the sectors to continue their operations; university education is not an exception. Both the public and the private universities of Bangladesh have to adopt online teaching to reduce academic loss. As teaching from home (TFH) is a new work arrangement for the teachers, this chapter explores their experiences. Different challenges regarding teaching and research activities, work-life balance, financial condition, and physical and mental state have been identified from in-depth interviews with 30 teachers from both types of universities. Some positive experiences have also been found, which indicates that the effect of TFH depends on variables like age, gender, marital status, number of dependents, and the type of university. The findings of this study provide a lens to look at the prospect of TFH for future use.

Methodology

A qualitative approach has been followed to explore the challenges faced by the university teachers of Bangladesh. Under this qualitative approach, In-Depth Interviews (IDI) with the university teachers are considered the primary instrument. For composing this chapter, the authors have used both primary and secondary sources. The secondary sources depict the scenario and the transformation of university education that may help the chapter conceptualize the challenges of the university teachers during the pandemic situation in Bangladesh. Secondary data is collected from various books, research papers, articles, and other materials according to the need of the study.

Thirty in-depth interviews have been conducted; 17 with the teachers of different public universities and 13 with private university teachers, 15 male, and 15 female. Most of the respondents are married and have dependents. The age range of the respondents is 29-54 years, whereas the number of kids and other dependents varies from 0 to 3. The participants' profile is presented in Table 1. The study used random sampling, and all the participants were informed before the interview. They were assured of maintaining the anonymity of their identity. Therefore, participant numbers have been used in the study. Each participant has been assigned an ID. For instance, the first participant was given P1, followed by P2 for the second participant until number 30. Depending on the convenience of the participants, the interviews were conducted face-to-face, via zoom, and telephone. Each interview lasted for approximately from 30 minutes to 1 hour.
